You might want to read that before selecting a specific helmet: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&es...aUnJoU9vnWoCpWQ

Bit out of date that link.

The current standard is Snell SA2010

For track days and the non MSA things you plan, a bike helmet would be suitable, and these are pretty cheap.

But if you wanted to do an MSA event (hillclimb, sprint etc) you'll need a Snell 2005 as a minumum, but h2005 becomes invalid in 2018.

From what I've seen, the cheaper helmets are just not as nicely finished and don't have brand costs added. They all pass the same test.

I went to Demon Tweeks and tried a load one when I bought mine, you could do the same in a bike shop.

Correct. But the point was to say that there are differences between motorcycle helmets and car racing helmet and why you don't want to use a motorcycle helmet in a race car.

But maybe everyone here knows that...

Swansea boyo!

I've got an OMP one too, it's really comfortable (I wear glasses so was a bit worried about comfort) I only bought one because I didn't realise you only had to wear one at pod if you were going over 100mph or whatever it is! I don't find it particularly heavy either :) ohhhh and it came with a bag from demon tweeks!

They don't die, they just get faster!

Not that different really

Fire proof lining, visor size and roll bar impact.

As both helmets have to pass the same impact tests I'd be happy to wear either in a car.

Roll bars should be padded anyway, so the roll bar test is questionable. Fireproof lining is a bonus, but you could just wear a nomex balaclava.

For track days and drag racing, bike helmet is more than good enough IMO.

It was always listed as 'may be removed in 2016'. The 2015 Blue Book states 2018.

I belive SA2015 is due to start about now so if your buying a new one id make doubly sure its got that certification or you could be chucking the best part of 5years of useful life away (in motorsport at least)

http://www.smf.org/standards/sa/2015/SA2015releaseNotes.pdf

That said you dont actually need it for track days and all that so you could pick up a used one. Your head tho!

Oh and best advice for buying a helmet is go along to a shop and try them on. Fit is everything! The difference between brands isn't really a big deal. Just price vs what you like the look of really.

If you're looking to do any MSA type events, find out if you'll get screwed over by their new insistence on HANS type devices being used.

Doubt it would ever apply to trackdays or RYWB though, but might be at least getting a helmet with HANS posts fitted just in case.

I've had my Simpson open face helmet for a few years now, it's in perfect condition, rarely used...and now almost no use to me because of the stupid rule changes. for next year

For in car use I wouldnt even consider a full face helmet, although they are bound to offer more protection.

If you buy an SA2015 Helmet it has to have Hans posts anyway.

The thing to remember is if your just doing track days/RWYB you can use what ever the fuck you like. They dont care. Its your safety in your hands BUT if you are going to go out and buy a brand new helmet then you might aswell make sure its going to be MSA legal for the longest possible time just in case you ever feel like doing proper motorsport or maybe just want to sell it in a few years..
