Looking at buying a cheap (2k max) economic, fun, diesel daily.

It can't be much over 4m long.

Test drove a 2006 Seat Ibiza TDi FR yesterday. Really like it, but the car was at the top of our price range, body was a bit rough and had no record of cam belt changes.

Also considering Audi A3, Golf (bit dull), Skoda VRS? Steering towards something PD engined.

Is there anything else I should be looking at?

In the 13's at last!.. Just

If your looking small, the vrs would be a strong contender. I loved the mk4 golf but mk5 was a bit plastic. Audi feels a bit better finished but will come Dow to price and spec I suppose

Anything with the 1.9 tdi 130 should be good as long as it has been maintained.

I have a passat estate 130 as I need something large for work. It's been good for the last 4 years but it's getting g a bit ropey now. It does have 170k

My dad has a a3 tdi quarto 130. Same engine as mine just 4 wheel drive, that's a fun car and good on fuel. I'm sure the normal front wheel drive a3 is just as fun if you were to get a 130 model.

Lol 300k is inpressive
I've just bought a 2002 caddy 1.9 tdi with 79k on the clock to replace the passat.
I need a van for work really.

It's the same engine as the passat but with a different turbo I belive.

Forget VW audi shite.

Cheap + Diesel + fun = Citroen

The 2.0 citroen diesel engine is widely used (ford for instance) and decent. Not sure about the smaller cc ones.

But for example

Could be.

You don't have to dig far under the Ford engine covers of my Mondeo to find the double chevron casting marks.

2 litre is OK but I wouldn,t touch a 1.6 Hdi engine in a cheap diesel.

I had three turbos give up on a Focus 1.6 diesel !!

My A6 has just clipped 150k.

Barring needing a bit of a suspension refresh it still runs a treat and returns 45-50mpg on the sort of mileage I do in it.

Hardly fun though.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Oil feed pipe blocks up, a common fault.

A Ford main dealer will not replace a turbo on a 1.6Hdi unless they also replace the engine.

It is a lot more than just the oil feed pipe that gets blocked, needs a full engine strip and clean out to be certain - Ford won,t do that.

Lots have got away with an engine flush and new oil feed, but not everyone.

Had a mondeo 2l diesel. 130k the dual mass flywheel went. Then the injectors went. Then the clutch went. I had to call the rac out 3 times in the year and a half ownership! Never ever will I get a Ford again!

Vw/audi all the way!!

I chopped my a4 in with 198k on the clock. Everything worked, never had to replace more than service items in 150k miles.

I could tell you an equally shit tale of a £35k audi that had less than half that mileage!

I always expect to fix things on second hand cars. I know I've never sold a car without a problem. I suspect most people sell cars for a reason other than wanting a change.

Interesting about the 1.6Hdi engine, I didn't know that.

Cheers guys. Although I've only just read most of these responses, after buying a Seat Ibiza FR Tdi. Great fun to drive and a claimed 60mpg.

Let's see how we get on.

That is pretty much the most fun car you could buy at your budget with a dag dag under the bonnet!

Keep on top of oil and filter changes, the standard intervals are in my opinion too far apart and set with 5 year servicing costs to sell to customers in mind rather than the longevity of the engine and turbo. Every 10k miles IMO.

yeah,

Ive been doing my oil every 10,000 miles, but just checked and the interval is actually 15000km (9200 miles) so might start doing it every 7500 miles.

the Seat is the same.
