I'm in the process of building a k1100 engine and wanted to know what ecu most people are going for?

imo its a very personal choice, i would naturally advise people with little knowledge to find a mapper and fit the ecu he/she likes the most

i personally would use an ms3(x) on a k head build because i can build it to do exactly what i want

There will be no consensus.

The Specialist components ECU is a decent option as he'll be able to load it with a decent base map for K-headed motor.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

yeah,

all a bit personal preference,

I like the megasquirt stuff, but it is aimed at the DIYer, so unless you have some electrical knowledge you might want to look toward somthing more off the shelf.

VEMS looks good, but Ive never dabled with it, ive got one of their wideband guages though and its great.

Emerald, been around years so well proven, ive used the old tuning software and it was pretty intuative, I imagine the newer stuff is too...

Omex, not played with, but heard people whinge about the software.

SC, well proven, its on a lot of K1100 stuff ( unsuprisingly as they do the kits), it took me a little while to get my head around the software, but maybe I'm spoilt by the glossy megasquirt interface.

one more thing to consider, SC is the only one where you'll get a loom to fit the application, thats qui a big decider IMO

Emerald well proven, easy to use software, good tech support.

DTA well proven, easy to use software, used to be hard to deal with but recently bought out so may be better.

Omex I have not used personally but well established.

SC I have only had a go messing with Mr Bellamys to make it run a bit better, but I didn't personally find the software nice to use.

Find a tuner that will support tuning your build. Go and have a chat and make sure the ECU will cover all of the functions, I case you want any outputs to control other features.
Remember to factor in the loom, sensors, plugs and wideband, etc.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Stuart not sure where your baed in the Country however I used a local tuner Northampton rolling road (NRR) using Omex 600 and basic wiring loom (which is simple to cut in and wire up) on a K1100 build. I have now had mine mapped (I cannot tell you how much time can be saved by using someone who knows the ECU band and software intimately) and would be happy to post if this helpful.
Went Omex because they have been around a very long time and have true history, Re hardware and software stability and tech support. The kit is very good as is the free software and base maps which will get you started in the first instance. Cannot fault the system if you don't want to get in to an ms3 then this is a cost effective kit.
If you talk to Troy at NRR he has a copy of my maps and I am sure he would copy this on to you if needs be. Or talk to me if you go this route and I can dig something out in terms of maps and what I achieved in terms of power/torque from my build.
