Hey guys, im new to the forum, had a few minis in my time but its my first turbo one so thought id join to get advice and meet fellow enthusiast! 😊

Just bought a 998 turbo mini project off a friend of mine, doesnt need alot of work to get it on the road, needs radiator fitting, new battery, welded or new passenger step and some welding behing the dash, probably a good tune up aswell, but as its off the road anyways i was wondering if i could get advice on a couple of mods? Maybe a little bit of extra bhp with safe psi so i dont melt it. Just bought a fletcher twin core rad to go in, been told the cooper s head (12g295) on a 998 turbo is best way to go to increase cyliner volume? And possibly some 1.5 rockers aswell. But what would or have you lot done?

Current spec:

Engine-

998cc engine and head standard.
Metro turbo, manifold and carb.
Cone air filter.
Fuel pressure regulator.
Electric fuel pump in boot.
1275 gearbox.
Rc40 exhaust.

Brakes/suspension-

Vented discs.
Green stuff pads.
Gmax shocks.
Hi-lo suspension.

Other mods-

Wide arches.
13x7 wheels.
Bucket seats.

Hello

Not sure if you were after comments on the spec but.........

Bin the metro turbo T3 and use something else, it's a dog on a 998, especially with a standard head.

The pump and pressure reg need to be as metro turbo type (i.e. an injection pump and boost sensitive reg).

A 2" exhaust will be easier to match to the turbo downpipe.

I wouldn't bother with the vented disks, they just add weight. and Green stuff pads are shit.

Finally, 6" wide wheels give a better drive.

yep i can say the green stuff fade out quite bad i was told a while ago that the mintex 1144 pads where the once to get check on that tho as its been a while

i have the metro t3 but on a custom manifold and yes you'll be turning 3500 before you'll see boost but it kicks when it comes in
it depends what your wanting to do with it but id recommend a modern turbo if funds permit

Mintex for the win. M1144. As said above vented are not needed on the road and only on very quick track cars.

The spec is as i bought the car, only bought it last week lol cheers for the tips tho, N hi alan!! Haha. Just been offered 2 fully stripped down 1380 engines minus 1 block, so 2 lots of pistons 2 heads 2 cranks n so on, except 2 blocks. So i may be going 1380 yet 😊

Hello, welcome.

The 1380 pistons may not be suitable for turbo use (or only very low boost).

Have a good search round here for example builds and what sort of things you need to be doing to ensure reliability.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Of the pistons currently readily available I think it is still true that the lion's share of us use 10cc Cast Omega's these are available from MED in +20, +40 & +60 and have been proven by many to be very robust.

There are also a few people out there who have ran Cast Omega 73.5mm (1380) 11cc pistons but I know of at least two people who have had failures using these (may be due to setup issues or that they are slightly less robust than the smaller 10cc variants).

Thats not to say you can't melt the 10cc +20,40,60's down if you don't set the motor up right.

You can also get 18cc Forged Omega's in +20 which are probably the highest end forced induction a-series pistons currently available.

The above are pistons which IN MY OPINION you should be looking at. I am not saying that you cannot use the pistons you have been offered.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Fair point, was referring to the 1380 post and didn't notice the lack of block. Afraid I am not qualified to comment about 998's in turbo use.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Why not go for a GT15 turbo, and make it nice to drive on a daily basis? :/
