is there any high demand of bolts ?
recently i have bought tubing and plate for my arms and beam
anyway the same person who i bought them from will make me batches of bolts and etc
we haven't discussed option of anodising yet but i would think this is possible
i will be looking at doing
drive flange / diff cover
clutch lockout nut
manifold stud set
thermostat kit
clutch cover
starter motor bolt
water pump
speedo drive
single bolts will be available to purchase also
these are example of what i will be considering at the moment
i will be considering doing other parts if the bolts take off eg rear subframe mounts, solid front subframe mounts, clutch arms and etc
they would be a fairly large weight saving using the above if used.
please comment on weather you would be interested in any of the above as well as suggesting
PLEASE NO STUPID COMMENTS ON WHAT'S THE POINT AND ETC
sorry simon (madmk1) if im treading on your toes
let me know on here or theminiforum if your interested

this is only to gain interest no mass of bolts have been bought only for myself at the moment

Hi mate,

Well I have an order in the pipe line (as I told you on TMF) and should be with me at the end of January, for most of what you have said and more.

One thing I have learned from the past is I don't post to I have them in my hand and I am happy to use them my self.

Regards simon.

I didn't realise you was going to do the bolts kits again was reading your other post
What happened in the end ?
I'm having one of each bolt done with appropriate tests but if your definitely doing them then I will adventure out on other ti bits

Hi mate,

What happened last time was I was sent to Afghanistan last min, after I had taken the cash from lots of TMers (if I had known I was going I would not of started it) anyway I placed my order and went, fast forward 6 months, I got back and there was no bolts, as the bloke I payed had been layed off and cleared his emails before going so there was no records of my 2k order! So the Manlay thing to do was pay all the lads back here who had trusted me! With there hard earned cash! This was OK as I had it in my 3rd bank account. So fast forward 18 months and I got my cash back after lots of emails and fucking about!

Yes as we chatted about before, I have been running small orders for bits I need and I normally Offer it to some blokes that I trust (to pay) and then I order and pay my self, what we have chatted about, then and only then when I have the bits in my hand I take cash as then I know it's fit for the task.

As for me ordering 1000s of bolts just in case someone wants them, well that's not for me lol.

Simon.

Sorry Simon I must of missed you saying the bolt situation in the pm . I thought you was just doing the diff cover/3 big bolts for January. My fault so apologies again I shall let you deal with the bolts in that case then

It's cool mate,

As you most likely have worked out, this stuff don't happen over night, so I have an order coming on payday of studs and bits and then I should have one more order coming after that.

Like I said before I could put all this in one order and get it in one hit but I would end up with lots of Ti sat about.

Feel free to pm me what bolts you are looking for and I will get back to you with a sort of price when I know it.

Out of interest, what nuts and bolts can be replaced on the mini with a lightweight alternative? Whilst still being safe. I'm assuming keep everything to do with the suspension/steering/drivetrain assembley still needs to be high tensile and everything else is good to go?

I'd be more interested in finding a decent ti tubing supplier

I'm going with mostly ti however it's just a few bolts I might consider using stainless as I may not be able to get the nuts and bolts anodised as My own ti arms etc and don't want bare ti on ti otherwise I'd consider using ti everywhere. Simons build will show you all the weight loss with changing bolts as far as steering and etc I will be changing mine all to ti products aswell as ti driveshafts and etc

As I have swapped 99.99% of the bolts / studs on my car to Ti, as a rule I do not fit Ti on the suspension/ steering/drivetrain.

I never fit Ti to Ti so if the bolt is Ti then I use steel k nuts as these was the lightest nuts I could get. Also a lot of my Ti bolts have been back drilled where there is no side load, and all have been cut to the min thread engagement over the hole car.

So as you can see it's a long boring task lol.

I've used ti on ti in a few places, just always use an anti seeze compound on it.

Thanks Si/Kez for clearing that up. I think I've been bitten by the TM bug!

I think I would rarther gain a few gram on a nut than using compound personal but each to there own
Note worse mucking about with a horrid nut and bolt but tbh I can't think of many actual nut and bolt situations anyway
I think I may start a build thread on here soon as I've got one on tmf and seen a few comment regarding tm quieting down a little.

I'm 60% Ti. With about 10% annodised allumium bolts. With all the critical areas are High Tensile steel.

There a few Ti standard unf / unc bits a still need.

Engine & gearbox will be about 80% Ti hopefully. Permitting what Simon comes up with next.

To be fair it's a very expensive game, but quite addictive.

Cost per kg saved is quite high. About £500 per kg.

My new wheel nuts from Simon.

404g saving - Cost £200 = £495per kg

What's people's thoughts on Ti bolts on split rims. There's something like 64 x m6 x 35mm cap heads on my ST10's. That's about a 190g saving

I'm not sure I would. A few reasons.
1. Folk who have fitted stainless have had them work harden and fatigue, this says that the bolts are working fairly hard

2. I know Carl is rightly choosy about what he will buy to fit to wheels

3. Carl is the most dedicated man I know about saving weight. If he thought it was a go er he would have done it years ago, and I trust his judgement.
