I bought some mini spares sc drop gears and the gear appears to be 3-4 thou thinner than the standard helical gear, so with my current shims being 1360 and about 1375 gasket thickness 0.0350 I get end foat of 12tho, I'm aiming for 4 thou I can go up to the 138/139 shim but its only going to get me to 8 thou ish.. The gasket seems quite thick if I fit without gasket there is a gap around the case as its being held off by the gear and shims so I'm thinking of a Realy thin gasket anyone had similar issues

What are the thickness of the washers you already have? Both of them.

4 thou on the gear is fuck all to adjust out unless the case's are worn or been messed with in the past.

What was the clearance of the helical gear? is it really the 4 though less on the new gear that's the problem? Are you torquing up the transfer case bolts when you are checking the clearance?

A combination of gaskets and thrusts usually gets you where you need to be

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

1375 and 1360 are the shims so if I were to get both to 138 I'll be lucky to get to 10 thou Mayb 9 if I'm lucky, the gasket seems thick any ideas where I can get a realy thin one

just buy a cheep shit gasket set, the grey ones that come in those are usually quite thin in comparison (In my experience)

where did you get the gasket you have?

The reply your get from most is that it doesn't matter with straight cut gears. Make of that what you will.

have you thought about buying gasket material the thickness you need and tapping one out with a small hammer? my local auto shop sells it in a bunch of thicknesses quite often i just make my own rather than wait for one that might be correct it just takes time with a small ball peen hammer and a set of round hole cutting punches for bolt holes just make sure the material is sutible for the use ie fuel oil coolant what ever

A craft I became quite adept at during my work experience at a bus depot! Shame I've not used those talents in the last 20 years!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I would say that it is "less critical" but not that it doesn't matter.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Cheers guys the only thing I could come up with was a trip to my local machine shop to have a few thou removed from case checked everything to make sure it was ok to do so ie nose roller clearance etc and it seems fine
