Cracks in the root of the teeth is barely an acceptable answer for the overall failure - but this is a strange place to see a failure, after all the Headset ratio is only seeing what, 1.2, maybe 1.3 times engine torque... If it was to go anywhere, it would normally be on 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

I was told that the A+ with its larger bearing is fine, its more of a problem with the smaller A series bearing?

Look at it this way, if you get the cheaper drops and they break then you'll want to get the roller one anyway and you'll end up buying twice. Might be cheaper in the long run to get the rollers?

you are quiet right 300 when the tyres spin the relieve the whole box but its when you are in the higher gears you still have all that tourque still loading through the box especially when you are travelling at speed you also have to counteract the airodynamics of a brick eg the mini and the engine is pushing all the torque and hp through it trying to push it foward.

As above. 4th gear locks the mainshaft, so you arent actually driving through any gears as such ( apart from drop gears ) I'd say the breakage happened in a lower gear, but just didnt become apparent unitl you shifted to 4th for some reason ? Every A+ box I broke was exactly like that. I stripped about 4 boxes before I finally went with a Tran-X straight cut gear set. It usually happened when overtaking in 3rd gear. Ive only broke one Tran-X, stripped 2nd gear. Ive never stripped or damaged the helical drop gears. I also think from my brief readings here, not too many have either. At least with them 4th gear cruising is quiet. Edited by stevieturbo on 11th Sep, 2005. 9.85 @ 145mph
