Hi

I'm trying to wire up my nippon denso alternator.
Is it a case of cutting the existing plug off and connect the wires to the spade conectors?
If so should my ignition light come on if wired up to the alternator correctly?
I have not got my megajolt wired in yet...could this be the reason for no ignition light?

Thanks
Josh

Thanks I found that diagram.
Is it just a case of connecting the wires from the existing plug to the alternator?

Thanks

Pretty much.

Edit, mine has 3 pins at the back so not sure now. Was ages ago but it seemed straightforward

Hmm only thing I think it might be is the fact that I haven't got the megajolt wired in. Would this cause me not to have a ignition light?

I binned my ignition light so can't answer that, or start the car to try the wire on a bulb.

Mine would not charge without the ignition light

It goes from
12v ignition feed - charge light - alternator

The alternator grounds the wire when not charging and feeds 12v when it is

I wired mine back to earth first time round

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I had this problem on my mrs mini. Jumped straight in thinking the alternator had gone and changed it out for the charging problem to still be the same. The battery light had lost its 12v feed some so couldn't feed the 'charge' signal to the alternator.

Was having another look at this today.

The big brown wire that goes to the soliniod is constant live. One of the other wires from the original alternator plug is also constantly live.
The other wire is switched live. (Which I belive is the ignition light).
Should I only have one wire that is constantly live?

OK chaps, I've wired it up as the diagram.

I have a strange problem. The ignition light comes on as soon as I connect the battery even with the ignition off. As soon as I turn the key the light goes out.
If I change the wores over no lights work at all.

Any ideas?

Check this:
1) wire for the dash bulb from the alternator is grounded when the alternator isnt charging & gives 12V when it is charging.

2) The other side of the dash bulb is hooked up to +12V switched fuse box feed.

Basically, when the alternator is working it gets 12v from both sources and no light, when not working gets 12v from switched ignition feed and grounded at alt.

OK. I got the wires mixed up.
I sorted that. But now the light doesn't work.
I got it all fired up and tested the battery. It charges fine. I just have no ignition light.

So if u take off the ign light wire at the alt and ground it; the bulb works? If so, yes - bad alternator internals.

Sorry for the thread hijack but similar issue.

I’ve got the three pole ND alternator however the pinout is specified as P-IG-L on the label rather than the usual S-IG-L config.

P - Direct battery connection for load sensing
IG - ign switched +12v
L - bulb in series with ign switched +12v

Ignition off - I get +12V at pin L (yellow wire)

Assuming faulty alternator internals as this should be ground without engine running?

On a flier I picked up a used alternator off eBay which is identical to the item I pictured above.

Key on and alternator plugged in I see ~420ohms between L and chassis ground. Key off this jumps to 550+ohms.

The above resistance results in around 1.55v potential difference between 12v+ and the L terminal which will never be enough to switch the light on.

Am I missing something here? For something so basic it certainly is causing a massive headache

i would ignore the resistance, as theres semiconductors in there doing stuff, if its wired correctly I wuld just get a replacement reg module off ebay and bung it in, they are about 15 quid iirc

Thanks Joe, have ordered a new reg now so let's see how that works. It was odd that the other alternator listed as "working when removed" has the similar if not same issue though. Perhaps the ebay listing was full of the usual lies and false optimism.

The new reg will confirm once and for all so let's see...

It's worth having a spare reg anyway
