Right, I am still in the dark ages and use dial up internet, now for some reason for the last 2 weeks or so only, my computer keeps trying to dial a connection itself.

Previously, it would only dial a connection when I started an application such as Outlook or Internet.

In addition, I also keep getting a pop-up for a "Win-fixer" scanning program, that also keeps trying to install itself on my PC. I keep fucking it off, but how can I get rid of it? I suspect it could be this that is dialing (or trying to dial) a connection?

Any help welcomed, I am shite with computers.....

SOunds like you have something nasty kicking about inside the machine.

Try scanning with your virus checker and spyware checker.

Disconnect the modem until you have the problem licked.

If that doesn't sort it, try booting into 'safe' mode and see if it still mucks about.

yes I found that bit.....but how can I find out what it is that is trying to dial up??

What spyware software is any good? I have Norton antivirus but that does not seem to pick anything up?

Go download HiJackThis then run HiJack This, and review the log - you will then delete the one file/program that says WinFixer. Once you delete in in HiJack This, it will be gone forever! When you reboot, it will no longer come back!

Right cheers guys, I tried the "HiJack" thing, but none of the entries seem to relate to the "WinFixer" thing that keeps appearing?

However on the same download site I found a thing called "Pop Up Washer" which seems to be really good and has stopped the "WinFixer" thing for now, so I will see how I get on!

Cheers for the help

I run Firefox web browser, which blocks pop-ups as standard.

I use Lavasofts Ad-Aware for getting shot of spyware. Free to download.

I also use AVG virus scanner, which is free 'en all.

I hate paying for software! *wink*
