*angry*

Getting really frustrated here as I'm feeling like I'm on the last leg. New engine in, bolted up with all the ancillaries and ready to run. Except it won't run!

It's a new 998c engine I built and I'm running MJ on it. I don't have a coil or distributor to try starting with or else that would be my next step.

Firstly, I've got a new cam in there and I'm doing a lot of cranking to try and troubleshoot this. Should I be worried about that? I've got good oil pressure but I know you're supposed to get it to 2k pretty quickly.

I'm getting smooth cranking and every do often the starter dies down likes it's going to start but then nothing. Once in a while there is sound like it's firing but only briefly. Getting some smoke out the exhaust here and there.

Things I've been through:
Jet was set really low, so reset that to initial position (two turns CW from flush)
Manifold was not tight so leaking fuel (tightened)
Trigger wheel sensor wasn't close enough (Adjusted and now confirmed spark from plugs)
Check missing tooth position (Looks to be right at TDC with the sensor 90 degrees from that)
Running without MJ powered (Just using EDIS "limp home mode")
When I've pulled the plugs they've looked quite black and wet but this can be wiped off easily.

Really hoping someone can provide some advice! I'm getting really bummed with this

What fuel pump are you using? Have you set the pressure correctly?

Have you definitely got a spark?

Have you got all the carb pipes blocked where they need to be, or not where they need to be open?

Using the metro fuel pump and set at 3.5 psi with gunson gauge

Pulled the plugs out and turned the engine over and definitely got a spark.

I'm going to check the plug lead order later. I'm wondering if maybe I reversed the power connections to the coil pack and might have my 1/4 swapped with 2/3.

I followed this guide for the connections. Pretty much just block everything off except for the fuel inlet. Unless I'm missing something.

Any fears about all this cranking/starting attempts on my cam?

I wouldn't worry too much about the cam as you gotta get it started some how!!
Just once you got it started do the high idle for 20mins.

If it's got fuel and spark I'd say lead order.

Leads it was! Swapped 2/3 with 1/4 and it started right up!
Now I've got a new problem though! The oil filter gasket/o-ring blew after about 5 secs of running. I think it was over pressure on the oil. Coming soon to a new thread near you!!

Thanks for the help with this one. It'll be running soon.

Glad it was a simple fix!

Me too! I just wish I weren't getting schooled by all these "simple issues" so often lately.
Gotta learn some time I suppose though
