Does anyone know, or have a link to, what the air flow is like around the rear of a mini?

My engine is in the back, and I want to place the intercooler somewhere useful.

I've even thought about adding a big naca duct in the roof to divert air to it?

Cheers

Im sure there will be plenty, always worth putting puller fans on it though at low speeds and an IAT gauge on to see how it performs at varying speeds.

leeds/wakefield.

there isn't any usable airflow down the sides that's for sure despite all the ducts you would see on Z car minis, its on the roof of in the front I'm afraid.

I'm putting clear naca ducts in the back windows then make a cowling to fit over the intercooler with fans behind it to pull only fresh air in.

It's not quite a standard car but these are the only wind tunnel pictures I've seen of a mini.

There aren't any reasonable quality CAD models of a mini floating around are there? Wouldn't be too difficult to do a simple computer simulation to get a rough idea of the flow features.

The only proper way to do it is with a charge cooler with a rad at the front.

My IC at the rear is a bit useless. I have a fan on it to draw air through. The fan is only on when on high boost.

Not a big fan of air/water chargecoolers for track cars since it takes ages for the system once heat soaked to cool down to ambient again.

How about a rs200 style roof mounted intercooler? Nah...looks nasty*smiley* Another trick is to use intercooler water spray as used by the Integrale Evo in rally trim,
or nitrous N-tercooler type systems to literally freeze your intcooler and get IAT's well below ambient

I've thought about mounting a shrouded 600x300x74 intercooler in the boot opening, cut a Naca duct in the roof and duct the air down the C-Pillars to it??

All I can think of is the heat soak from the hot engine in front of it though.....

Not a fan of chargecoolers, but maybe theres no better option?

Nowt wrong with charge coolers. If you're woried about heat soak (and ICs suffer from it to); then just have the pump and fan running on for a bit after you stop.

I say fan, as usually the rad at the front is infronmt of the normal cooling rad that will have a fan.

Kind of an idea of what Ill be doing.

Im going to rig up the fans to run on longer after the ignition is cut.

Similar to what I was thinking. Although I want to keep it all under the height of the rear window.

The conversion is pretty well tucked out of the way and I dont really want to be able to see the intercooler through the window.

Ah right, not something I really care about haha.

You can still see out the back like just a bit obstructed.

The engine is absolutely Massive mind so Im towing for space.

Think I'll try something like this then considering there's not a wildly better option. Duct it from 2 naca ducts on the roof.

Will also put some insulation on the back of the shroud.

Under floor is probably mostly low pressure area, so bad place for the intake.

Thats pretty much what I had in mind Steve.

But fitting fans on the other side aswell to pull air in down the ducts and throught IC.

Not sure if there are fans on that lotus somewhere like.

You sparked my curiosity with this question and it's something I've been meaning to do.

I acquired a CAD model from GrabCAD and imported into Star-CCM+, It's an extremely coarse mesh with arbitrary numbers at 50mph airspeed, but shows generally what happens. If there's a case you're particularly interested in I'd be happy to refine the mesh and run a more accurate sim.

If you want to view the full sim I can upload a Star-VIEW file which will allow you to rotate the model around.

Going by those diagrams, A low scoop at the front of the boot floor area, exiting out the boot lid looks like it would work.
