a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

just purchased a 1966 Mk1 mini for my son, its a basket case and we are going to fix it up.... question is...

it comes with that god awful 850cc engine.

can you convert the 850 to say 1071 ?

also is there any upgrades I can make to the magic wand gearbox rather than go over to remote / rod and cut holes in the floor pan ?

cheers in advance folks !

Richie

Just my opinion but don't modify it. Keep it original.

Keep it stock. And there is a kit for madgic wand. To make it shift better and more reliable. Forgot where i seen it. But probably a quick google.

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018

yeah I would, but he has grown up around mini's and knows what he wants... he wants it period and correct, wants to put some 10" minilites on and leave it at that.

only other thing he wants to do (against my advice) is change the colour from Almond green to Surf Blue.

it needs an inner and outer drivers sil, along with drivers floor pan, an inner and outer A panel for drivers side, a pair of wings and front panel, a small repair in the rear drivers side quarter, a valance, and a boot floor repair. doors etc are immaculate, and I know where the car was purchased from back in 66.

complete car cost £1400 delivered.

I am toying with the idea of a mk1 or mk2 for myself if I can pry myself away from military kit.... but as you know I have a problem with staying stock, just cant seem to do it !

have to agree with the others; and the fact a standard car is probably going to be much easier to insure

Totally agree Rob. and to be fair I did say to him that in time....and with his own no claims..... he can drop a 1275 in, or sell the mini and go the later modified route.

depending on the gear case its tricky to get a 1275 on a wand box, if its an 1128 casing then your laughing, it'll go straight on, ( think they did 1128 MW's late on....) other wise there'll be a faor bit of case grinding to do, and the early casings are known to breath through to the outside world... theres details in vizards how to modify your mini.

My new project is a mk1, but really really bad. Was planning on building a road legal period racer on wide 10's with t45 cage etc. but the more I think about it the more tempted I am to leave it stock, apart from some decent 4 pots, a tuned 1380 and a set of of rosepetals.

In my opinion, if you had bought a complete running 850 mini and were asking if you should turbo it, i'd say no, leave it stock.
However, you describe the vehicle as a basket case, which if you are going to spend money rebuilding, and bringing back to life, I reckon you should just crack on and do whatever you want; but Only if you are committed enough to see it through...
