a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

Well, Nathan's Mk1 has arrived and it's fair to say there is quite a bit of work ahead of us.

There has been an attempt made on a ffront drivers footwell which will need to come back out. And a shoddy offside wing repair.

It needs a rear drivers side floor section, a graft put in the rear drivers side wing, a drivers side door step, and outer sill, inner and outer A panel for drivers side, a complete boot floor, rear drivers side wheel arch grafts, rear valance,

Doors are all good, boot lid and bonnet is good, glass is all good, and I have a pair of dry sub frames which are free of rot.

The front stubby is a twin bolt job, it's missing all of its components. Can I fit components from the big bolt subframes ? I will put negative bottom arms and rose jointed bars on, but I am unsure regarding the top arms and cones etc etc ?

Pics to follow.

Yep, all the arms etc will swap into the early subframe.

I would recomemend tacking some support braces in there before you go any furthur, and preferably checking the body alignment from the subframe mounting points.

what year is it? I would consider sticking a whole floor in it, as otherwise you might find your patching other bits in a few years.

these may be handy.

Going to re fit the subbies and brace the shell for sure ! I will ultimately be soda blasting the shell and having it coated professionally before paint goes back on

great stuff, being a 66 you shouldnt run into too much trouble getting pannels like on earlier shells, ( like the flat sills on the 59/60's)

check the moustache fits that front pannel, mine didnt...

Well We had an afternoon in the garage yesterday, went to fit the front subframe and immediately found it didn't fit. It appears who ever fitted the front N/S wing and front panel had done so without the subby in place...

So much weld had been used that it was easier to cut the pair off for good and replace with new items.

Some
Bars for extra bracing are in order now before I go any further.

The nearside has been braced but the offside hasn't.

We can then chop out the shoddy footwell repair.

Got a new welding set for the project which is a Mig, mma, and Tig (dc) unit, never done Tig welding so I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. Purchased some tungstens for it yesterday only to be told from a local welder that I should bin them as they are the toxic ones 😣 (I bought thoriated tungstens) which I managed to blow to bits very quickly indeed in any event *happy* *happy*

I use them for mild steel and stainless with no concerns and they were specified for stainless coded welds where I used to work. I presume he's referring to the fact that the 2% throrium they are doped with is mildly radioactive. It's harmless while welding but just wear a simple dust mask when grinding them, it's only if you breathe in the dust from grinding that there is a tiny, tiny risk as the thorium is an alpha emmiter so you don't really want it in your lungs. I presume he said ceriated instead (for mild steel)? Personally I don't like them and just use common sense with the thoriated ones.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Cheers Rod.

Yeah he said ceriated on steel and zirconiated on Ally.

Well, still assessing the job at hand, and noticed that the nearside has been repaired to the same low standard... Can anyone tell me if this is correct mk1 outer sill ? It has 6 raised sections.

I didn't think the mk1's had the square hole ?

Think that's the later outer sill, mk1 should have 4 raised sections

true... shit soaked paper mache would be better than over sills *wink*

spent some time before work hunting out the various grafts that have been put in, grind out the shoddy weld then Tig new welds back in. its going to be a time consuming job but I would rather there be little to no evidence of panel grafts in the shell.

Northamptonshire.

I've gone for the replace panel rather than patch now after I started stripping the paint back looks like a patch work quilt. Passenger side had 4 sets of sills on oringal + 3 over sills. So gotta do full floor door steps and that to fix it. I feel your pain haha but still tidy 66

cheers.

I managed to score a new 100AY aldon dizzy and some sort of performance head (not for this mini btw) its a 12G940 head (cooper S) but has been stamped with "h.e.d.s" I have never heard of this before ? massively ported, and the valves are like dinner plates.... don't think its Longman but who knows !

anyone ever come across this "h.e.d.s" stamping before ? (I have put the question in the tech help thread section)
