Hi

Quick question (i hope). When wiring the EWP80 and controller combo does anyone know if i need a relay for the fan?

In the below link it says it implies i do but the kit doesn't come with one so its a little bit conflicting. Also does it matter if i get a 5 pin or 4 pin 12v, 40amp relay?

A rather confusing document to say the least.

But from this caption on page 11 wiring diagram "NOTE; CONTROLLER EARTHS THE FAN RELAY" it 99% implies the controller itself just has a standard transistor output (they are virtually always NPN transistors so ground a relay coil rather than give it 12V) and that it doesn't have an output with enough current capacity to power the fan direct.

But from the statements at the top of the page, have they included it in the loom and it's just covered with loom tape ?

If not you only want a 4 terminal one and, unless it's a massive fan, a 30A one would probably suffice.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

thanks rod, glad to know it wasnt just me getting a bit confused.

I've ordered one in case, only £3 and i dont recall there being one in the loom. I'd thought a relay would be an obvious thing to spot unless it is a different one to the big block that i was on the lookout for.

Will post a piccy up later off the loom supplied.

Yes that's what earth's the relay. It's so if the controller fails it switches the pump and fan on constant which is better than not at all.

Relay connections : 86 - green wire from the controller. 87 - live to the fan. 30 & 85 both are 12v supplys from the battery.

Hope this is helpful.

long time since i asked the question above and was doing this today. does this is have to be a switched live or can i run it straight off the battery from the starter pin?

Hey Taz,
I would use a permanent live supply so the fan runs on along side the pump after switching off the engine if things havent cooled down enough to help with heat soak.
Obviously an in line fuse is recommended for that live supply to the relay.
