HI

I bought from ebay a neat little digital inlet temperature gauge. It has a sensor at the end of a wire. Earth and live.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201295325567

I've wired it up earth to earth, live to switched live. It works perfectly displaying a temperature.

As soon as I fire the car up it just goes blank. Still lite up just not displaying a temperature. As soon as I turn the engine off, it displays the temperature again.
I tries fitting a diode but same thing.
I sent one back and got one returned but same thing.

Any ideas before I send it back and get my money back?

Thanks
Josh

Voltage too high once the alternator is online. You'll need a 12v voltage regulator to supply it.

The one I bought years ago had some kind of resistor with it that needed wiring in for this purpose iirc ?

Cheers guys.
Is a resistor the same as a regulator?

The regulator on the fuel gauge is mecanical ( on/off) What you may need is an electronic voltage regulator.

They normally come with a zener diode regulator to make them suitable for 12V use. I think they need 5V by design. You can buy DC voltage regulators dirt cheap if you don't want to mess about with a zener diode. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5x-Voltage-Regul...K7cDwCj8tRie-8w

Thanks mate
I take it I need a 12v version?

Looking at the gauge, I'd say 12V would be correct. It does sound as though it already has some kind of voltage regulator already, though. Is there anything on the supply cable at all?

That's the component that came with the gauge I bought. That looks like it should do the trick.

Fantastic the guy I bought it from has no idea!!

He reckons it reads from 200c°-1200c°! And just needs to get up to temperature!! Lol

I take it you just wire these regulators in to the power?

They are pretty straight forward to connect up. The pin out will be easy to find on the net. One pin is ground, one is supply, one is output. I haven't checked the specs of the one in the ebay link as I was thinking you'd need 5V rather than 12V. You need to check what the supply voltage range of the chip is, as the supply voltage might not be high enough.

Ebay description says the display needs 9-12v. Outside of that it might not work.

5v will be too low and 13.4v from the alternator will be too high

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
