Hi

Hopefully someone on here will have some knowledge of these gearboxes.

I need to replace the gearbox on my Skoda Roomster. It has the MQ250 (I believe) 5 speed that seems to be shared by tons of cars on the same platform. Question is, how interchangeable are they? It seems that the code on mine is unique to the 1.9PD tdi Roomster.

It'd be great if I could use one from say an Octavia. As this would open up options for second hand boxes making it tons cheaper.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

3rd gearbox (two separate cars) in 18 months! I'm starting to think that they don't like me.

What do you reckon Robert. Whack a new roll pin in, JB weld the case and crack on?

Oh bugger! That's the last thing you need.

If it makes you feel any better I changed the supercharger bypass valve on the wifes Bini last weekend. Mid range fluttering/hesitation gone, success.
Clutch now slips on all but the very lightest of acceleration. Arse.

Cheers Tom. Nice to know it's not just me.

Like you say. Last thing needed right now. I'll probably fall asleep under the car. Might be quite nice actually. Hmmmmmm.

Not a great deal of help, but he says the Roomster is Fabia based so look for Fabia gearboxes. All he could come up with is perhaps the ratios are different but I'm sure you've already guessed that yourself.

Yeah. I'm guessing the ratios/final drive will differ depending on the engine output/car weight etc.

If there's no difference in the case/inner cv flanges etc. I could live with slightly different ratios and the speedo reading incorrectly if it means I'd save a few hundred quid.

Apparently a Mk5 Golf gearbox will also work

What's the deal with all the gearbox part numbers 'codes'? There's so many, even just looking at Skoda.

I'll keep adding any findings here to make this thread less rant and more useful.

Gearbox ratios here
http://workshop-manuals.com/soda/roomster/...ies_(roomster)/

I'll have to confirm, but looking online I reckon my box is code JXZ. Ratios are in the link above. Now I just need to cross reference this with the other codes to find one with the same gearset and FD.

It was nearly a 'huge torque diesel re chip baby transporter'. But I've managed to resist so far.

Where have all the metal bits come from anyway? Is it not repairable to save the codes/ratios headache?

I know! Paul's tiny girl hands will be redundant.

Yep. The Mrs 1,9 tdi Golf did the same, spat all the oil out. Poor mini got the blame at first.

It was replaced by VW even though it was out of warranty as it is a known problem. There is a pin that works loose and gets chewed up in the gears, in our case being spat out through the case.

As expected...

Replacement box ordered. It's near identical to what was in there. Still £300 though.

It's a complete twat to change. The subframe needs to be swung out of the way to drop the box out.

to be fair, £300 isn't the worst. How is the clutch looking while it is out? DMF?
