Been to T&M in colchester today to have a check over, the only differences to my car from last time where a set of 1.3 rockers (previously 1.5) and i connected up my vacuum advance for a bit of off boost economy, thinking that the dizzy would back off to the locked timing on boost!!!

Well as suspected i gained a nice bit of low end power due to the lower lift rockers but lost 13bhp at the top end, this was until Ray sujested ditching my vacuum advance which got me back to 168bhp!! Exactly the same figure as last time but with a much smoother curve, all runs on 12psi.

It seemed that the vacuum advance was making the timing go all over the place under boost and giving some extra retard too.

I know certain cam/c-r/engine size combinations can gain by fitting 1.5 lift rockers but for me personally going to 1.3's was a right result*happy*

I don't think any of the standard rockers give a "true" 1.3 ratio though, do they ?
The standard A+ items are quoted as giving 1.245-1, so a set of "genuine" 1.3 rockers is obviously going to give an advantage over this.

Tick over is alot smoother, 30mph in 4th is nice now with only the occasional little hic-up. The banana graph is also now much smoother especially at the top end!!

the old pressed steel rockers which were fitted to many A series in the 70s are 1.3:1 ratio

on this rebuild i am fitting minispares 1.3:1 roller rockers with plain shaft

& trying a phase 2 out

The sintered ones do vary a lot, from tolerances of where they bored the hole in them to fit the shaft through, after they had been pressed and "cooked".

By a bit of trial and error, and about 12 sets of standard rockers, it is possible to make up a set that are truly about 1.28:1 ratio......

The 1.3 roller rockers don't give enough of an increase over standard to justify spending ?150 on them, was the point I was trying to make anyway! They are worth it though if you are using a radical cam profile and need the increased reliability of the rollers to stop sideloading the guides.

changed to 1:5 from 1:3 about 4 years ago and gained 6 bhp, but also gained 12 ibft, all top end which was where i wanted it but i don't have to use it very often on the road. sounds like you've got a very well set up unit
