Just a quick question.
Can I remove the clutch housing with the engine in the car?

you need to jack up that side of the engine a fair bit, on a Mk1 you have to remove the rad but yu should be ok ion later cars as they dont have the rad duct,

Servo might get in the way, but you should be able to move it to get clearance,

exhaust and gear change need need disconnecting, Pretty sure you can do it with the drive shaft in place but keep an eye on it, other wise just watch for wire/pipes that are not long enough.

Be aware of the replacement gasket thickness. Even assuming it's the same housing you are putting back on, lots of the aftermarket gaskets are different thicknesses to the original (even assuming your current gasket is the original). The idler gear endfloat is affected a lot by the gasket thickness and you can't measure it in-situ with engine/gearbox bolted together.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

hmmmm,

if the seals out you might be able to get a dti on the primary gear "just" or plastiguage it.

To be honest, by the time you stripped everything off that you need to to be able to jack it up enough, you may as well just pull the engine out and do all the jobs properly/easily.

I have split it from the engine and seeing how much room I need to get it off I was thinking It would be almost out by the time I had stripped everything off

I would take it out. Done a few in the car for clutch replacement but its a hard thing to do. Get driveshafts of ( they pop out anyway ) exhaust ( never removed the gear changeer) but as said. Its a nightmare.

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018
