gt17 no intercooler

hi guys,

currently fitting a gt17 to the mini, i want to run without a intercooler due to MOT restrictions here( the install needs to be as low profile as possible) so i was wondering does anyone on here run without a intercooler, and how does your piping look? as the space between the plenum and turbo is so akward, im looking for ideas.

You could probably do something very similar to that standard metro turbo setup. Use most of the standard parts, adapting it for the GT17.

Although, if you really wanted something that wasn't easy to recognise, a custom plenum would be bettter.

Difficult for you,given the restrictions that you mention,and anyone who knows minis will recognise a turbo set up, with or without IC. I experimented with a Metro turbo setup, including a standard plenum and covered it with an adapted large plastic aircleaner box as fitted to many A series cars. This hides all the turbo stuff pretty well.

I think you will need to restrict boost and power to "sensible " levels with no IC though.

can I be the devil on your shoulder and just blank off the intercooler for the test and bash it back on once a year?

thats what a lot of people do here regarding catalytic convertors, airbag steering wheels etc.

If you have to run without an intercooler I'd make up a pipe to come off the compressor housing and try to get it into the original position of the Metro. That way you can use the standard "Gonzos nose" and connect the two with a small piece of silicone like standard.
If you really can't run an intercooler, what about water injection ?

Couldn't you just run it naturally asperated by putting a air filter on the plenum? Then after mot re fit and connect intercooler?
Saves a lot of faffing about.

hi guys, im in portugal. cant have a turbo, because the car didnt come stock with a turbo. stupid laws here(basically you cant modify much) i had a t2 before the gt17, and had the intercooler. but the MOT inspection has gotten stricter latley and i want to draw as little attention as possible. after mot, the intercooler will go back on.

tadge44 any chance you have a pic of that plastic aircleaner setup?

will just an air filter on the plenum work? how will the car run? as i need to drive it to the MOT place, and it will need to go throught the smog test etc... will it do any damage to the turbo leaving it disconected?

my original thought was what phil mentioned above, just thought i would see if there were better solutions out there.

Have a go with out one and see how it works.
