Hi

I have just taken delivery of something like attached.

It has got roller bearings inside, which eliminates oil leaks through the seals due to wobbling. I believe this will remove the risk of oil leaks (which I currently have, even with new bushes and seals on the racecar.

But how will this be frictionwise? and will it cause any issues having the output shaft rolling in bearings that have almost the same strength as the differential bearings themselves?

I think it is an interesting modification personally, but am interested in you technical views :)

I saw those for sale, they are from that chap that rallys the mental Kad 16ver, if they have been used in that and still look good then the must be good IMO.

I'm also sure I saw similar for sale in either billet or a modded casting, but cant remember where from,

They where sold by him, but used by his friend for a while before he opted for fine spline different stuff, so sold this. They are still in very nice condition

Kad had some needle bearing newly cast ones they made

Looked on KAD site but can't find them.
I'd be interested in trying a set of these as I suffer from oil leaks as well!

My build thread..

If you have continued oil leaks, you likely need to rebush the side plates. I think this mod is interesting, but the devil is in the detail. Fundamentally, it'll work as there is inherent looseness between the output flange /pot and the diff output shaft spline, and a small amount of clearance between the diff cage / crown wheel bushing and the diff output shafts.
My only concern is that there is a light interference for between the OD of the bearing onto the new side plate, and a similar fit on the ID of the bearing. If the ID has a transition fit, it'll likely leak initially, and/or fret and Brinnel itself later...
I'm assuming it eliminates the c clip on the output shaft and uses an external snap ring to to hold the output flange / pot from walking off the bearing?

Great idea though *smiley*

Thanks Dave, I will post some pictures once I have taken them apart to give them a clean.

One thing regarding the std bushes, at least on the racecar (appendix K racer) they do seem to wear relatively quickly, suggesting there is quite a bit of metal to metal contact between the bush and the output...

If that is the case also on other cars this roller bearing mod should help giving less friction at least. That is on the cars thay can use them

They are more complicated than i thought they would be.

There are two r20 ball bearings pr side. The inner one is open. Its a press fit both on the output shaft and in the sidecover. Between the inner and outer bearing there is a normal oil seal (simmering) theb the outer bearing is a sealed r20 bearing, again of course press fit on both items.

Here are some pictures: what do the experts think regarding these? increased or decreased drag?

That’s different.

I have seen Guessworks selling some with needle rollers in place of the bushes.

Can’t comment on how those will hold up.
