ok most of you know i run a hybrid turbo made by ***.
it has now twice failed, snapping the shaft both times , the current one has done 8 runs at avon at 20 psi , 20 minutes on the street at 15 psi and 3 laps of combe at 8 psi ...there was no warning no lose of oil pressure , i just lost boost .

the first turbo did a couple of track days and that was it before it failed, when i sent it back , they said it was due to hot shutdowns !! which is crap as i know how to cool down a turbo , but it was his word against mine so we ended up going halfs on the repair .

So as no one esle seems to have had a turbo fail in this way , what the hell is causing it???

Everyone knows that instructions only have to be read if the thing doesn't work....

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

is the oil feed ok? any restictions or internally crushed areas of the pipe?

i was just wondering if its getting a restricted oil flow, then building up heat before weakening and then snapping under load? (i say not having a clue what im on about)

I'm thinking incorrect balance...
I just can't see how oil starvation can snap a turbine shaft, given the scenario Mark described... When I was going through turbos - it was because of my crappy minispares oil pump that wasn't building pressure up quick enough. The failure was blatantly an oil supply problem, but i never snapped a shaft (ok, it's a T2 but even so).
Now you run any turbine even slightly off balance, and it'll self destruct, sometimes as a cyclic fatigue failure (as i suspect is the case here)...

Personally - I'd get the part number needed, and have the turbo rebuilt at somewhere with decent dynamic balancing facilities.

I'm with Dave, personally I think that oil starvation would make the shaft badly worn/scored and knacker the bearings in the centre cartridge up, but I just can't it it causing a shaft to physically snap.
Balance would be my thoughts as well, fatigue failure over many cycles.
