Guys, I'm after a thread tap extension to tap some M8x1 threads for the undrcrown cooling jets.

Being quite deep in the block I can't even get the little chuck type tapping handle on and rotate it enough to start the thread off.

I've looked for a long shank M8x1 tap but can't find one.

Is there an extension available anywhere? A chuck on one end with a long shank and a square drive at the top to put a tapping handle on would be ideal but I can't find anything like that online.

Any help would be appreciated

Warwick.

If you have an appropriate sized socket, wedge it in there and give it a whirl. or another, if you're feeling brave and skilled in the tapping ways, put the tap in a drill chuck and you'll be done in no time.

Just remember removing a snapped tap is not going to be fun

David.

If it is just a one off job I weld an extension on to the tap

youll find a 12 sided socket will fit if you have a good socket set that doesnt skip sizes. I use this method when my 3/8ths drive tap chuck is too bulky to fit in somewhere.

I've done as Denis in the past (as 12 divides by 4) but 4 sided sockets especially for taps do exist,

specifically sized for the standard range of squares on taps.

I used a piece or round bar with a hole in one end to insert the tap into, a grub screw positioned to locate on the square “Drive” of the tap. Worked a treat, I did try to post a picture but failed miserably.

Hopefully there is now an image and it helps?
