Hello folks,

I need to put a feed and return in a tank, I was planing to braze in a couple of bits of copper (no problem) but am a little concerned about petrol vapour and explosions, What can I do to prevent blowing myself up?

Fill the tank with water, this will drive any vapours out. Fill it to a level just below where you are working, will be fine. Ideally drain the tank and leave it empty for as long as possible before doing any hotwork on it.

Excellent, will be in touch soon as my mate is now back in the UK.

No I'm afraid not, its a 7.5 gallon from a later car.

If you want any pointers on doing the return give me a shout.

If you mix petrol and water, it won't light.

All I've ever done on tanks is to (after draining the fuel) fill the tank around half full and shake it about. Then empty and repeat. Never flashed anything up yet. *wink*
Folks are a little paranoid about it, but that's always better than complacancy (so says the man who knows the burns clinic nurses by their first names!)

petrol and water may not ignite that easily, but its any petrol fumes/vapours that you need to worry about.

I flushed mine several times with water before attempting any work.

Even then, I was still worried, but everything worked ok.

Better to be cautious.
