Fill the tank with water, this will drive any vapours out. Fill it to a level just below where you are working, will be fine. Ideally drain the tank and leave it empty for as long as possible before doing any hotwork on it.

If you mix petrol and water, it won't light.

petrol and water may not ignite that easily, but its any petrol fumes/vapours that you need to worry about.

Any different on foam filled tanks,as I have a 2 gallon alloy fuel cell that could do with a bigger outlet
