So.... just out of interest I pulled apart a knackered XR3i fuel pump to have a gander inside....

the armature and brushes run soaked in petrol!!!!! *surprised*

I wasn't expecting that, In fact it make me rather nervous!

What if the pump seized and the windings got hot!!

Hannibal: There are two ways we can do this: the easy way and the hard way. In a few minutes my friends and I are going to come down on you like your worst nightmare. You're gonna wish the Earth had opened up and swallowed you whole.
bad guy: What's the easy way?
Hannibal: That WAS the easy way.

Thats why you shouldn't replace the fuses with nails or foil off your L&B's. *wink*

when i removed a fuel pump from my rover 400 i was amased to see the wires ran bare, and now i always worry about a dogey connecion sparking... guess petrol isnt as volatile at atmospheric pressure and in liquid form as we would all believe.

by bare i meen the spade connectors a tthe ends were submersed in petrol. also always worried about the fuel gauge sender sparking, as its a variable resistor.. soaked in petrol.

yep thats true, but i'm thinking i'll never be letting one of these run out of fuel ...

air goes into pump, churns round with a bit of fuel(basicly acting like a carb), brushes spark, boom!!

I know car manufacturers are pretty good at churning out cheep bits on their cars, but I would guess the engineer that designed it thought about the no fuel scenario and it is most likely tested in this situation long before it is fitted to a car. If it was a problem I think we would be seeing burnt out cars and big law suits all over the place.

Try looking at how your fuel gauge sender works.

Open contacts sat in the tank. These can quite easily spark away as the sender moves up and down.

Ever seen one blow-up?

Neither have I.
