My old laptop I used for ECU work seems to have died, this had a serial port. Now I've got a laptop from the 21st century but it only has a USB.
Looking at USB to serial cables they range from £2 to £30+ on ebay. Do the cheap ones work ? I've read mixed reviews.
Can anybody recommend a "Known" one that will work for sure.

Phil.

Colin has done the research on this one, and looked at the Ftdi driver. I must admit I use the Bluetooth adapter with my vems ecu now.
I can’t find the link... drop Colin a message

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I used an ATEN serial to USB adapter. Was fairly simple to get running on the PC. I think its quite common with megajolt users.

Used to run a chinese ubs to R232 on megajolt, on MS I have to use a r232 extension to step away the dongle to get ir work wile the car is running, end it up buying an FDTI, easy to set up on win10 but steel need to use the extension, never bother asking why, it works...

somthing I did to circumvent the poxy USB adaptor issues with different chips and drivers was to get a PCMCIA to 232 card, it seemed to be a pretty solid solution, especially as I needed a 9 way 232 socket for other stuff anyway.

but check youve got a slot before going that route.

I bought one from trigger wheels as I just needed one that I was confident would work out of the box with megajolt, but if it didn't it was my hardware at fault. It was nothing special and once I had it in my hands and knew the manufacturer I could see that it was available elsewhere for a few quid cheaper.

Edit: It worked perfectly every time without any messing.

The one Robert has posted looks exactly the same as the one I used.
