Somewhere around Swindon

Is it worth dry decking the aluminium 7 port?

Quite alot of you guys have dry decked the cast iron heads but is it worth it on the aluminium head? If so can i dry deck it by just modifying the block as i really don't fancy having the head welded up.

I'm not sure if its strictly 'worth it' but you certainly can just plug the block side and get the benifit of the improved distribution of coolant flow.

Just plug the block with grub screws, there’s no need to do the head, unless you really want to create a genuine dry deck setup.

Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Promotes cooling around No4 allegedly, while your carrying out some machining/drilling/tapping there is a mod to relieve the casting around the water pump that supposed to help.
Also worth thinking about if your going to be running an ally radiator also is a change of coolant from the usual IAT antifreeze.

I see the real benefit with the turbos, Is that when the inevitable head gasket fails because you went a little too far; you can still drive home on three cylinders!
Having now done it with a K1100, I’m pretty sure I will always do it on all my future minis too...

I dry decked my 7 port SC head with brass grub screws sealed with some loctite thread sealant.

Can always return to wet deck if need be.
