I'm gettin gready to fit my 12G295 head. However I need to clean it up a bit first, it was obviously kept in someones shed. Whats is the easies or safest way to clean off the surface rust and dirt and to get it out of the ports?

Also how do I check if it has been modified to take unleaded or if it hasn't what is the easiest / cheapest way to achieve this?

Paraffin and sandpaper.......

Make sure its not badly pitted on the head gasket face, if it is, it will need skimming.

If its an older 12G295 that has been stored some time then it is unlikely that it will be unleaded. To check you need to remove an exhaust valve, clean up the throat, and then check to see if you can see the interface between the insert and the original head material. The only effective way to modify the head is to have seat inserts professionally fitted.

In the process of putting in inserts, any shop worth its salt will clean up the head for you (most likely for a nominal fee, which you should gladly pay!)...

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
