Wolfie - Get a 5/16" UNF hi-grade (will have six, not three lines on the head) in a 2" length.
Also get a single 5/16" UNF nut.

To save goosing the block, do the folowing:
Screw the nut all the way up the thread. Add a washer. Insert threough the steady bracket, steady and into the block. Screw all the way in, then 1-2 full turns OUT. Now, (stopping the bolt from turning), rotate the nut along the bolt thread and then tighten the nut against the steady.

Basicslly, you're using the bolt as a stud. Doing this, will always mean the bolt will wind out should you manage to break it (like jimster did at Avon 05). It also stops wearing the thread in the block - basically, you're makign the bolt the part that'll take all the wear - NOT the block.

That's how i've done it in every mini i've ever had - having broken a bolt in the block on my first lowly 1100!
