There is nothing incorrect about that setup. Using the appropriate input conditioning circuit for a sensor doesn't make either the sensor or the circuit incorrect. A Speeduino ECU is a DIY project and you can set it up in many different ways for many different setup. And a VR sensor is perfectly fine for this application (could even be superior in some instances).

And so is using a simple hall sensor without external add ons, which adds points of failure or error for what is a critical sensor/input.

A VR sensor IS fine, when it is what the ecu is happy receiving directly.

Which is what his setup is. A Speeduino with that VR board is not some kludge but one of the normal supported hardware configurations. It's no more a new failure point than any of the other hand-soldered components on the board.

Can you get a Hall Effect sensor like the MPI one with a protruding probe? As this is the type I need to mount behind the Crank Pulley to pick up the grub screws that are mounted in the back of it.

Speed is just a question of money, so, how fast do ya wanna go?

Because this pulley is designed to have 35 grub screws inserted into the rear side, that act in lieu of a trigger wheel. The sensor probe extends beyond the out circumference of the pulley to sit over and pick up the grub screw heads.

VR sensor for the crank is my choice, no electronics inside it, jut a coil and magnet, and the electronics (conditioner circuit) is nice and cosy in the ECU case.

Hall sensors, esp. aftermarket ones, tend to be unreliable esp. in harsh environments.
I had two genuine Ford ones fail on my old Mondeo, cam sensor, ran in hot oil (and a pain to change).

Re. Speeduino, I built one from a kit about 4 years ago just to see how easy it was. Quite impressed for the price then and I'm sure it's come a long way in four years.

EDIT - I should add I never tried the Speeduino in the Mini because I couldn't easily replicate the siamese code that the MS2 could run. I just ran it on the bench and put it aside for another project (which I still haven't started...)
