hi i am wanting to create a mini turbo i have looked allong the lines of the metro turbo but i cant find a decent donor engine.

i have seen that people have created 998 turbos using the metro manifolds and turbos. i was wondering if a 1098 turbo has been done as yet.

i have heard that this engine runs a compression ratio of 8.5-1 which would be quite good for a turbo.

what mods would i have to make to the engine to allow it to run reliably with a turbo and also what other parts would i need to create this project.

so far i have decided on

bulkhead box from avonbar,
metro turbo carb+ manifold,
metro turbo t3 turbo and manifold,
modified plenum chamber,
renault 5 intercooler,
dump valve,
modified actuator,
boost guage,
boost controller,
different needle,
replacement carb spring,
fuel pressure regulator,
electric pump ,
fuel return pipe,
modified fuel tank,
flexible oil feed pipe,

is there anything else i will be needing to do to install or build this engine

jamie

steel flip front, fiberglass bonnet with 4 lamp pod and vents, tinted windows, 13"revos, 6point cage, recaros, harnesses, custom abs dash, twin exit exhaust, chrome bumpers, chrome grill, electric blue carpet, group6 arches, clear lights, push button start, flaming cooper laurels on front screen, mini wings logo on rear screen, custom dash clocks from a mg of some sort, and soon to have a car pc and a 998 or 1098 turbo

Should make quite a good engine, as the 1098 is longer stroke. However the pistons are not great and will not stand up to a large boost pressure, so you'll need to be careful. Also, due to its long stroke, the 1098 does not like to be revved, you'll need to keep the revs right down to avoid it doing damage to itself. Any work you can do to stiffen main bearing housings will be beneficial, e.g. centre main strap at the very least. You'll also want the turbo distributor, to make this easy to fit, you will need a 1098cc A+ as an engine to start with. These are quite a rare engine as the vast majority of the 1098's were A series.

thanks seeing as they dont like to be revved would it be better to go the 998 route instead do u think as i already have a 998 sat in my garage i also have a seized 1275 that i could possibly use some parts from for example the gearbox and head. i will be doing all the work myself as i am quite a keen diyer and would much prefer to do it myself i get more satisfaction out of it.

i am still trying to make my mind up which way to go

someone please help me decide

oh yeah and money is an object im trying to do this on a tight budget as i have spent enough money on the car as it is lol.

thanx for your help

If you have a 1275 use this as a base. Bore it +20 thou, fit a set of large volume dished pistons to reduce the c.r. Then rebuild bottom end, new bearings, oil pump etc. Centre main strap, then get the cyl head chambers enlarged. Add all the metro stuff you mentioned above and you essentially have something that is equal to (really BETTER) than a metro turbo motor.

i have already saidd that money is a bit tight at the mo so i cant really afford the price of replacing pistons and overboring ect and i like the idea of the small engined turbo as its a bit different to the norm of the 1275 turbo.

If money really is tight then stick to something like a NA 1275. A turbo mini engine regardless of what size, will cost you quite a sum of money to get running reliably and well.

the pc is for the sound system i have already got the pc its just lying round at the mo waiting to be installed i havent spent on it as i just had one after upgrading my home pc so it is only gonna cost me the price of a second hand touch screen (about £50) so i thought wat the heck and install it anyway lol.

thanks if the 1098 will rev to 7k that should be ok for me i wasnt thinking of taking it much more anyway lol.

im sorry i dont have a sister but i have an ex lol have loads of pics for the right price lol hehe

Will the turbo dizzy do for a 998 turbo as well - at least until I can afford a jolt?
