Hi all

Building a short stroke 1275 (1100) and need some advise about a clutch.

Have been advised the "99% of the turbo guys stay away from verto and fit the pre verto setup as there are more plates and diaphragm options available"

Have always been a pre verto person and have a clutch ready to go. Looking at 150-180 and I don't think the diaphragm clutch will cope, the Grey plate was doing OK at 100 but ??

Initially looking at the Minispares lightened Verto flywheel and the +20% cover

Then looking at the Minispares lightened Verto flywheel and convert to RTS.

Car is used for hillclimbs, so harsh take-offs

Also as an aside - can the flywheel be lightened further ??

regards to all

That's an old phrase. Most turbo engines use an RTS verto now.

Unlikely launches will be the problem, simply from a lack of grips unless you've got some serious slicks.

Clutch will be under more pressure say hard in 3rd or 4th gear

Clutches do seem hit or miss.

I was lucky with mine 25 or so years ago where I hunted through dozens of covers at my supplier and found a regular 1000cc verto cover that was markedly stronger than all the rest. And this gripped anything I ever threw at it, probably around 200hp or so.
Many clutches before, listed as turbo clutches etc all slipped at the first sign of boost, this one just worked ( with a paddle disc of course )

Sadly it's unlikely anyone would have that luck these days

The twin diaphragm spring "RTS" as some call it, seems a very good option.
I've had other clutches for other vehicles that used the double spring setup, and it makes a lot of sense.

If you were feeling flush, Ascaso make a twin plate system
It is a pity it wasnt based around a verto though. But again, supply/demand I guess.

I run a pre-verto on the hills. Grey diaphragm and paddle plate in the turbo, it's served a number of seasons with aggressive starts (not slicks though). The other car also uses a grey diaphragm, not sure what plate (luckily not had it apart yet) and that's on 13x7 slicks, been in since 2021
