I am looking a buying an OBD reader I don't want to spend anymore than £500 and want something that can possibly identify the failed component. Or the circuit the failure has occurred in.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received

Lowestoft, Suffolk.

For use with one specific brand of vehicle or generic use?

That isn't really how code readers work. Code readers simply read codes. Which really isn't diagnosing a fault, although it can steer you in a direction to look.

You really want a proper scan tool with bi-directional comms that allow you to test actuators etc as well.
A graphing/scope type feature can be important too when viewing actual live data although a full on scope will clearly not happen sub £500.

Really, you'd be best to discuss it with an actual seller of such products, both to ensure you get something that will work for the systems you need, and also when you at least buy from a reputable source, you can also have some customer support.

Generic OBD is pretty limited and engine only. So you would want something that covers all vehicle systems, and also with marque specific features.

Topdon, Autel, Thinktool, Launch are all popular otpions with some budget orientated stuff.
Loads of stuff on youtube about most of them.

Genden offers a range, both handheld and PC based, which again can reflect price and ease of use.

And make sure anything you buy, doesn't tie you into a stupid subscription model, as a lot of the dongle/phone app types do this.

But research youtube, there are dozens, hundreds of videos.
And as said, ideally buy from an actual local UK source so you can have some customer support, as a lot of online sellers sell Chinese models, which will work for the most part, but there will be differences, and you will have zero support.
