does anyone here us a programable ignition system? if so was it an off the shelf item or does anyone know of any off the shelf kits available?

i stripped my engine last night to find the forged pistions to be severely damaged from detonation and even had a broken top ring on cyl one in about 12 peices.

so i guess it will coem down to a few things, one beign to far advanced, two being poor fuel quality, and three beign to much boost with no intercooler.

so my first step is to rebuild the engien with new pistons etc etc then fit new ignition system and cooler.

has anyone used the omega forged pistons from Avonbar? any thoughts on them?

Could you not hear it detting under load?

If it was bad enough to do all that damage I am suprised you did not hear it?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

drop the C/R ratio to around 8.5:1 run optimax fuel

fit efficient intercooler

it suprises me you did not hear the onset of detonation! my mini has a straight through exhaust and i am 50% def in one ear*laughing*

& i can hear it!

i suspect you did not realise what you were hearing for.*frown*

if you hear a rapid machine gun at a distance under the bonnet lift you foot!.....................

i was lucky only wiping two head gaskets out

then followed the above advice !*wink*
mapped ignition is the way to go*happy*
good luck

I run programable ignition and high compresion I bought a megasquirt pre asembled as I wanted the future option of fitting fuel injection.
I have done over 6000 miles since fitting the ignition and new pistons , running 9-1 comp and a max of 10psi boost returning up to 43 mpg I run little advance when boosting over 5psi but the clever bit is you can set it to exacly what you want knowing it is right.
I can get you a contact if you want

I couldnt hear the det when my first pistons went but when I fitted the megasquirt I was listning for it as I set the advance a bit high and I could hear it ( mostley up hill at around 3000rpm 6-7 psi )
I then played around with it until it stoped then set the advance a couple of deg less to be safe.

The slightest amount of Detonation over 5(!) years will take its toll eventually!

Oh well, lesson learnt. You've a plan of action that is basically sound, so built yourself a goodun!

bill@shurvinton.fsworld.co.uk is the contact I used and the service was briliant it is very easy to play with.(sorry I only just checked this thead as I usualy just use the front page)
You just weld the triger wheel on to the puly I asume the harmonic balancer is the pulys tech name it dosnt mater that the puly is rubber is the anty vibe or whatever it is.

over here in Oz we do not get many rolling roads?dyno's its just not that common but do not worry this one will be tuned that way, this engine had been in the car for over 5 years now so its done pretty well for the flogging it gets and the high boost level.

i have now recieved some new parts for the build up

just waiting on a few more bits too.
