hi all,

I managed to finally get my car started today i was going to take it up the road untill i pressed the clutch down. The revs dropped by about 150 - 200 rpm i am using a grey dia, paddle plate etc. I have never had this happen before or it may be that i was paying attention this time. Has anyone else had experience of this ?

jonny

Classic symptoms of a grey diagrpham and old thrust washers......

The weight of the clutch spring puts excessive load on the thrustwashers, gradually these wear until they are knackered.

Cue- picture from vegard..........

As Tom says - it's starting to happen. Pull it apart now, and chances are you will just be able to replace the thrusts. Leave it be for a long time, and you'll be getting the crank re-ground.

I agree 100% of above, if you leave it too long you will destroy your crank.

I've spent 20 hrs this week designing a clutch, and have come round in a full circle. Problem i'm having is that i'm trying to make it easilly manufacturable - ie laser / waterjet cut flywheel disc incoroporating the ring-gear; Verto centre for the flywheel, off-the shelf (tilton/quartermaster) cover - or at least diaphram spring, STOCK driven plate (most importantly), etc...

I've got a solution, but it could weigh in at the same, if not slightly higher inertia than a steel ultra-light... But it would have a 260lb ft torque capacity - even when the driven plate is worn right down past the rivets (unlike the stock item) AND have a release load of only 80% that of an orange diaphram...

*wink*

TBH Dave I would happily sacrifice a bit of light-ness (is that a word!?) for a reliable clutch that isn't going to constantly lunch the thrust washers......

indeeed! Well done dave, keep up the good work!I don't mind it being a bit on the heavy side. Could it not be made out of ally and then have a liner bolted in, or maybe sprayed on.

thanks for the advice guys, only thing is that these are brand new thrusts. i have spoke to a few people and they said that their car did it on start up but it then settled . it has worried me dont want to distroy bits in a new engine
