i've had a hunt around and cant find much info on this.

I presume its possible to rebuild a turbo at home and that you dont need too many specialist tools to do it? Infact i seem to remember a while back that someone on here did their own. So how difficult is it to DIY rebuild a T3?

plus, where on donkeys doo doo do i get a rebuild kit *blush* *blush* *blush*

The only problem I can see is getting it balanced afterwards. Considering the speeds the turbines spin at, even the slightest imbalance will cause disaster! I have heard of people marking the position of the wheels to the shaft for reassembly purposes, personally I wouldn't trust this to get it accurate enough afterwards.

Personally I would not attempt this myself, that is saying something because there are not many things on cars I won't have a go at, will quite happily rebuild gearboxes etc all day long, but I wouldn't touch a turbo......

Up to you......

turbines are balanced outside of the turbo, then marked up, dis-assembled and re-fitted inside the core.
Rebuild is fine so long as the compressor and turbine don't need to be swapped - otherwise it's a re-balance.

I rebuilt the turbo on my Iveco van a few years ago and I did over 40,000 miles with no problems (the one I bought for around £500 only lasted 10,000 miles ).I have rebuilt the T3 on my mini and it has done 11,000 miles no problem but the experts always say dont do it. Me being a chancer I just got on with it with my fingers crossed.( I am not sayind do it but it worked for me ) and it is easy.

If you do have a go at it, remember that the nut holding the wheel onto the shaft is LH thread.

I'd guess some copyright issues exist here, which is why the folder is empty...

Nice thought for putting the pictures up, but it is asking for someone to get sued!

how much does it cost to get a turbo reconned i have two, one has slight play on the fan, the other when taken from the car had oil all around the intake apperture and all over the fan blades so i presume oil seals gone....neither turbo has been tested, also the fan in the exhast manifold has a fair bit of play ? anyone advise me what is best to do before putting a smokey engine together ?

I'd think twice and maybe three times before going to AET, I have heard of many failures from them, not sure if they are all there fault, but may be worth doing a little research first
