I've drilled the bolts to 9.8mm to clear 8mm key The thread is 18.8mm and the bit above that is 17.9mm

If I go out to clear a 3/8 key hole size will be 10.8mm

will it be ok with 3.5mm wall thickness on the main subframe mount bolts seems a bit thin to me

I thought the original type hilo's were used on the earlier cars that used the solid mounted subframes, attached by the towers by 2 off 5/16" bolts. This left a big hole through the middle, usually plugged up with a grommet, but perfect for access to the hilo adjuster.
With the post-76 cars that used the large bolt, came the later style hilos that use the adjusters that you turn with a spanner.
I can't see why you want to change yours over? As you have to jack car up and remove wheel to loosen locking half nut before you can adjust them anyway?

Advantage is that you don't have to lift the car off the scales to adjust...

I'd always go for the older version.

I drilled my bolts out on the lathe, as dave says, it makes it much eaiser when doing the corner weights.

In the photo above you can see what I mean with the 'T' Bar for the hilos on the near side front hilo, the tower bolt is still in place.

Here you can see that the corner weigths are quite a bit off, these were done only a few weeks before.

This weight is with me sitting in the car (86kg's) and a full tank of fuel
