hi all, just wondering if you can fit the a-plus idler gear into the pre a-plus gearbox?

do you just have to change the idler gear bearing?

I do beleve we are on the eve of destruction

NO!

You have to change ALL the drop gears to the A variety.

The tooth profile is different from the A to A+ gears, this includes drop gears, gearbox gears, and CWP.

You can only use them as sets, although it is perfectly possible to mix and match, e.g. A series drop gears with A+ gearbox and final drive gears.

The other difference in the drop gears is the shaft size on the idler, as you have probably discovered!

The A series idler will go into an A+ case with an adaptor but the A+ will not go into the A series (unless you machine it to the right size) as the bearing and shaft are larger diameter.

i think the A series idler shaft is 1/2" and the A+ is 7/8"

I know you can definately get a kit to fit the A idler gear into an A+ box, but no sure about that other way round.

You're WRONG, Sorry :)

All four sync A boxes have got the same idler.

I'm fairly sure that the A are 3/4" and the A+ 7/8"?

For what it has to do, a 1/2" shaft on the idler would be tiny!!

y tom your right, just measured them as i'm in the same position for this thread, i have an A+ set and the box has a 3/4 idler bearing. i presume i can simply swap it for a 7/8 bearing?

also the final drive shaft nut is smaller than the A+, anyone got a minispares partnumber for the A series one as i cant find it.

You can't just swap it, as the hole bored in the casings is a different size.

It is possible to go the other way, e.g. A idler into A+ box, but not possible to go A+ idler into A box.

To go A idler into A+ box you need to use a conversion bearing available from Minispares.
