I bought a recon rack a few years ago just from my local factors, I think it was £15! It was absolutely fine after about 2 yrs of hard driving when I sold the car on. I expect its still going strong now!

Ok, I suspect the rack in mine is a "home recon" done by the guy that had the car before me, its sudenly developed a quiet knock as you go over centre with the steering, I guess i'll just have to swap it out.

Check it is not the column bushes worn first, you might be able to save yourself the job of doing the rack. Also check that the pinch bolt at the bottom of the column is tight and that the splines on the female side are still OK. These strip out quite commonly.
