Hi, im fairly new to turbos and minis! My old mg metro engine is well, getting old lol! It needs replacing and im considering replacing it with something that packs a punch!
I really love the idea of a turbo but am just scared of the reliability issues there might be! :S My mini is the olny car i have and i use it daily every day! (i drive to uni) The question im wondering about is, are turbo minis reliable and are they suitable for every day use? How often do the need rebuilding? I know that the reliability of an engine all depends on the person who rebuilt it, im no expert yet but want to learn but however do not want to risk putting something thats not going to work for half the year into my car! Im pretty confident i can put an engine together but i know theres alot of know how that goes in to these types of things!
Im contemplating weather to stay N/A and have something along the lines of a stage 3 1380 or go for a 1293 turbo!
Can anyone offer me any tips or advice because any would be really appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Rich

depends on to many variables but i use mine every day and touch would no problems once you iron out the intial ones.

if you dont go stupid you can have a turbo motor with about 120-130 bhp and would be a excellant daily hack plus put a smile on your face and can have fun with some more powerfull motors.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I have had my current engine since 2002, not had any major problems, apart from needing to replace the crank thrust washers. This is only a 180 bhp / bananas engine, mainly used for track days and drag racing running around 16 psi of boost.

normally i think a stock metty turbo engine runs at 4 psi, and was mass produced so if you leave it stock you should be ok.....as for N/A i have also just come over to forced induction from N/A and if you are wanting noticable power out of N/A then reliability will drop anyway, i was running 1480 with longman head, race cam etc etc and a set of split webbers, the car was like a rocket ship (which Mark can vouch for.......remember silverlink roundabout mate lol) but more power means more stress on drop gears, diffs etc not to mention high compression (in N/A engines) which lowers life expectancy plus high fuel bills as you have to up the octane in your fuel or you start blowing holes in pistons etc, i used to run AV Gas in mine ! and its a pain going to your local airport every week !

just my opinion......go for it, leave it stockish to start and go from there *wink*

That sentence says it all.

Get the "conversion" work done first, with it running somewhere like. Then if you want more power, start to develop it, adding the strength to areas such as the diff and gearbox top priority.

good arnswer tom always the biggest weak point in any turbo engine and proberly the most expensive outlay, but once bought and she is running sweet then tweek her up, with a standard engine run a intercooler set max boost to 10 psi get her rolling roaded and bobs your uncle and fanny's your aunt, you have a nice reliable little turbo motor to play about in.

then after a while change the cam , tweek the head then apply more boost.
