Hi all,
I am building a normally aspirated unit but I am unsure which camshaft to use in it, the block is a 1330, the head will be modified with bronze guides 37mm inlet, 31 exhaust, 1.3 or 1.5 roller rockers depends on cam,
Lightened flywheel and back plate, clubman gearbox with a 3.1 final drive (I am using this because I bought it a few years ago and I’m trying to save a few quid), straight cut drop gears and 12” wheels, 1”3/4 SU k+N and stub stack.

Any ideas?

Benny

Benross’s turbo was tooooo quick for me that why I’m not running a turbo,

I'd always go for a nice smooth tickover. I'm thinking a 256.

You are after a nice slow, reliable engine aren't you?

If using a 3,1 you'll need a mildish camshaft, 276 tops.
This means that a head with 37/31 valves will be stupid. This also means offsetting etc..

Use 35,6/29,4 valves. MUCH more reliable, and I don't think they'll restrict power either....

Don't wast money on a cam,get pnumatic rams on top of the valves like they use in f1,wire the whole lot up to a computer, variable lift/duration and timing on each valve all adjustable

is it for road or race use ? if race use the supersprint cam or the 649, if its a hot road cam you are after you want the 548 i have two supersprint cams u can buy off me 4 cheap i used em on me rally x car, also on a road built engine..... carberation plays a big part in it too.. i see u r using 1 3/4 you want to put the air box on it with k and n filter (believe it or not they flow better than the fancy looking cones and pancakes) and better on cold startups as for your manifold you may want to port and pollish it, get it rolling roaded and make sure you get the right needle. pending on cam, you need to have the right compression ratio, or you will have nightmares, took me five engines at five meetings to figure thatone out (OUCH MY WALLET) i was running 14-1 cr on a 1480 with 649 cam and split webbers (rocket ship lots a pull but a twat to cold start lol)

cant seem to get any timing figures on the SW5??

i heard this is similar to a kent 266, or i may be wrong?

i got told that this cam was developed in mind to reduce the emissions in the new coopers S that was!
some 6 years ago or so?

and does not produce the goods fully in respect of this *frown*

any comments would be welcome*smiley**smiley*

the sw5 seams to have good right ups it has simalar fiqs to a mg cam.

but with that big head you will need a big cam to get any benifit from it but all depends what year your car is because big overlap will give you big hc readings on tick over.

i would start with a 276 type cam for a start and go from there.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

i think i will agree with 1071 i will never go back to NA engines for my mainstream mini as once a turbo is up
and running you cant beat that mid range torque which no NA engine will beat.

so fog that sexy head and build a nice mild turbo lump instead. lol

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

iam trying to convert Mr hill to a turbo conversion but...........alas he is taking some persuading!

1071s your comments are most welcome it goes some way to bending Mr hills arm a tad.*wink*

vegard I took Mr hill out in my mini he was astounded by the sheer shove of the blower & for it to dispose of ALL who tried! to have a go *happy*

he said it was too fast!*frown**frown**frown**frown*

like you rightley say if he is going this far why not use a turbo for that something special..*smiley*make it have it all the way.

1071s do you have any timing figures for the SW5 cam the one we would want use.

thanks
