really good forum , but its got me really paranoid bought my turbo engine last week i thought it would be easy to fit, but after reading this forum i feel a bit glum as its all sounds so complicated,
can some one answer a couple of questions ? (thanks)

1, are turbo engines unleaded?

2, when fitting the engine can i keep a brake servo will it fit ?

2, has any one bought a high boost head from avonbar any good? i see they are unleaded too.

3, is there enough psi in the turbo to run a dump valve so i get a good whoooosh noise (yes im childish) but thats all i want a turbo for lol

thanks

awww don't feel glum... its involved but its not impossible by ANY means!

1) Post 89 engines should be unleaded... but there are very few of these about so you'll typically find a leaded engine. You can have the turbo head converted to unleaded... it just needs hardened valve seats fitted. (cira ?100-150)

2) Yes you can... I did (std late mini type). Its best to plumb it in better than I did (ooops!).

2 again *tongue* ) Avonbar are hopeless IMO... Vmax are flavour of the month and better priced.

3) A std 7.5 psi will dump if you really want it to LOL

Keep the servo of course.
If you look round Rovers, Fords and other motors, in breakers, You'll see they have one-way valves in servo pipes. Just use one of these!
Whiltst you're at it, fit braided hoses to the servo - this way you'll not have to bleed the brakes if you ever do have to pull the engine out in the near future... *oh well*

hmm, i've never thought about the turbo head being leaded, i'm sure my engine is one of the early ones as it has the mk1 dizzy, but ive been running it on unleadded optimax, i guess there is no way of telling of it has been converted without the head coming off?! how long do u think it would take to burn the valves out

hard to say... the exh's will suffer 1st...

Early blocks have the engine casting number (wfm1024) cast onto the rear and laters one have it on the front. But thats not connected to an engine being unleaded or not!

if your not sure about your head being unleaded id presume it is leaded and as for how long it will last running on unleaded its hard to say coz you cant tell if the previous owner used unleaded in it id use lead additive if i was you unless your planning on a new head in the near future ne way

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
