Hello all,

I would like some advice please.

I quite like the idea of having a 998 turbo. I think Ive got the gist of whats needed for the conversion but any help would be apreciated.

I think I need...
1. 12g295 unskimmed to keep the CR down?

2. Mirage manifold kit so I dont have to cut the bulkhead

3. T2 turbo off a R5?

4. Special turbo fuel pump (does this differ from a regular electric fuel pump?

5. Fuel regulator

6. Fuel tank with return and suitable sized fuel pipes?

7. Turbo HIF44 with plenum and inlet?

I want to bolt this lot to my late 998cc good condition A+ engine. I would like to start by keeping it relativly simple and run fairly low boost? Can I do the above and keep the engine internals standard for the time being?(assuming they are in good condition and the engine is of fairly low mileage?

Will have thought that the clutch my need uprating?

Any input would be greatfully recieved I would like as much info as possible before considering it further.

Many Thanks

Gaz

I think you're on the right lines too.

Not sure if the standard exhaust valves and guides ar up to the job (others please comment), but the clutch should handle 80 or 90 bhp I reckon.

Unskimmed head to keep compression down!! I would have it skimmed if its origin is unknown and if CR is a problem you could always have the chambers machined out to lower it.

A lot of the 12G295's out there have had a LOT of meat skimmed off them to allow them to be used with dished/flat top pistons. The original 998 Cooper engines they were fitted to, had raised crown pistons. Therefore, this large amount of skimming is needed to get sensible compression on an engine with flat or dished pistons.

By getting an original "unskimmed" example, you still have this volume, which is useful for CR purposes.

But as with any head, a LIGHT flash skim is always advisable to get a flat mating surface.

I think this is what was meant by the phrase unskimmed head!

Has anyone run a 12g940 head on a 998 and turboed it?

Suposedly if you run a standard cam the valve lift isn't enough to need the block pocketing.

Yes I run a 940 on a 998 with a turbo.

For 30 quid to get the block pocketed, it's just not worth not bothering (good double negative that).

And £15 for an MG metro (non turbo) cam is also worth spending.
