In order of importance-

Rebuilt diff at very least, preferably a cross-pin item

Straight cut drops are the way to go, although making sure your drop gears are PROPERLY shimmed will help a bit.

Are you 100% sure it is in good condition? Do you know for certain or is it just something you have been told? You need to MAKE SURE, just remember how much damage can result from a gearbox failure.

Drive it gently?

Seriously - don't blast/crash through the gears, remember that the stresses in the gearbox reduce as you go up the gears (4th is a direct-drive, so very strong) and listen for problems before they happen.

Quality oils will help of course.

hiya will, at the moment my mini is in the garage, spraying it and putting the engine in etc. why do u ask? ive got 3 gearboxes to choose from. according to my machinicking mate 1 is in very good condition. i dont really no wot to look for to be honest. also i have a mate whos selling straight cut drop gears. how much are they worth. and will that give it the annoying whining noise?

It is good condition from looking over it, or good condition as it has been stripped, measured, checked, and then reassembled?

If you are planning to run 15+psi through a turbo motor, the standard gearbox really does need to be in top order.

Straight cut drop gears are in the region of £200 new, so base your second hand price on that. Yes they will whine, but most of us love the noise that they make!

I only asked as I keep seeing minis in Congleton, just wondered if any were you. Obviously not.

Where is Halfords BTW, I'll come and find you one day.
