hello can anyone tel me what final drive a 1988 998 running 12 inch wheels would have, itl do 70 at about 3500 rpm in 4th.which is ideal for what i wanted.
i was told it was a 3.44 so went an bought one an stuck it in my med turbo and the gearing is way different to my old 998. my turbo does about 60mph at 4thou rpm im using 1-1 drops, the box is close ratio but as far as i understand 4th should still be 1-1 i just wanna do 70 at 3500 rpm, iv previously had a 3.1 in 1380 turbo and felt that was too long an now 3.4 too short. an iv heard 3.2 is rare, help me............*angry*

Your old 998 should have been a 3.105:1 ratio if it was the standard original engine.

It'll be a 3.1 then....

The only 998 A+ (transverse) units that had a 3.44 FD were metros (and - it's claimed - 'racing green' Mini special editions)

bare with me, i had a 3.1 in my 1380 turbo an that done a good 125mph, i know it pulled to about 6500rpm, does this sound right, it just felt so much longer than my 998 it always seemed to strugle to pull away with any enthusiasm, what does everyone else run, how about 3.2

165/60/12 tyres, 6500 rpm:

2.9: 129.6mph
3.1: 123.4mph
3.2: 119.1mph
3.4: 111.2mph

Oh, mini speedo's are about as accurate as a tape measure made of elastic bands.
Even more so when you've got a different FD in there...

Crap, that IS near 125mph.. Fast, that's for sure. I didn't think that the 3.1 and 3.4 were that much of a difference. Remember that some rev-counters are just as reliable and accurate as the speedo...
