What do you reckon the fast top speed in a mini is?

Has anyone attempted a record?

Yes, I have been watching 5th Gear lol

I reckon you'll pull 140 with enough power - much after that and you'll have your windsreen in your chest however!!!!!

Hey - good discussion starter AF!

I had my last one up to 100mph. Doubt that's a top speed, but gives somewhere to start! :)

i knew a guy who claimed that he had 125 and said it was almost undriveable as the tyres were so thin and there's so many holes for air to get in.

I guess the 16v guys would be able to give you a good idea of top speed as most of them run 5 speed box's from vauxhalls and hondas.

That Fifth Gear was sooo cool. I would love a Lotus Esprit, a dream since i was a little boy. Not to mention the fact that i live two miles from the Lotus Factory since i was small!

Good topic, i have always wonered about sticking a 2.7 or 2.9 FD in and inviting myself along to Bruntingthorpe with retro mag to do the test.

I ran a 3.1 at Combe this year and that was very quick flat out, unfortunatly my battery had gone on my digital speedo.

yes 5th gear was cool.

i agree with Dave 140 shouldn't be a problem but a 2.7 diff would be needed unless you have a revver of an engine.

I run a 2.9 as we no, and at speeds of 120+ a tad it still feels very safe and stable, i just don't go much more as if your ever going to melt any thing, it will be on the high speed passes *blush* and i don't have the cash to rebuild, but i to have wondered.

140 ish sounds about right.
130 on a runway is a piece of piss.

but the same speed on a motorway gets scary..i would guess *wink*.

Think you need lots more power than i have to go quicker, law of diminishing returns or summat!

Here for the craic..

I liked the beardy felllas quote on 5th Gear.

"So, Tiff, you got beaten by a guy doing 206mph wearing a cardigan and driving with one hand on the steering wheel"

hahaha.

My mini is flat out at around 100mph.

i once had 117 when the 1380 was NA and it was a hottish day along the flat but it was straight after a rr session but sometimes it would struggle to hit 110, thats on a 2.9 diff.

funny enough i awlays back off the turbo when i hit 5500 rpm so i would nt no now.

trouble with the mini is the aerodynamics of a brick doesnt help. lol

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Have a read through this. Find the frontal area and drad of a mini (must be around somwhere) plug in the numbers and see what the theory says

Didnt one of the marcos in the 60s hit 140 mph down one of the straights at le mans ?, I seem to remember reading it somewhere recently.

OK, bit bored so I have done a bit of hunting around and come up with this

Fd = Cd x 0.5 x rho x A x V-squared

P = Fd x V

Where:
* P = Power (in Watts) required to overcome the air resistance.
* Fd = The drag force (in Newtons)
* Cd = Coefficient of drag (Lots of figures quoted, I'm going for 0.5)
* rho = Density of the air (about 1.22 kg/cu.m - depending on temperature, pressure, and humitidy)
* A = Frontal area in sq.m. (about 2.0 sq.m I have no data, if you have any correct me please).
* V = Forward speed in m/sec

And when I plumb in the figures that I have got I get very odd results, indicating that my drag and frontal area figures are rubbish.

Results:
To do 100mph you only need 73bhp (this seems low to me)
To do 120mph you need 126bhp
To do 140mph you need 200bhp
and to do 150mph you need 246bhp

This is of course assuming that the car is geared to the max speed at the max power of the engine.

I reckon that if I can get some reasonable figures for frontal area and drag then it might give some useful info. Unfortunately no two minis are the same.....

I seem to have forgotten to include the drag of the wheels, i.e rolling resistance. If you add this to the above then it should make more sence. No idea how to get a figure for this though

a 1275 mini will do about 70bhp and about 100mph....

So perhaps my figures are close. I should piont out that the BHP figure has to be at the wheels, for obvious reasons.

Anyway, a rough approximation power needed to overcome rolling resistance is:

weight x 0.013 x mph / 375 (don't ask me why)
So adding this to the final power required:

To do 100mph you only need 78bhp
To do 120mph you need 132bhp
To do 140mph you need 207bhp
and to do 150mph you need 254bhp

This is of course all theory and assumes no wind and a flat surface.

LOTUS = L ots O f T rouble U sually S erious
me dads got the Elan S2 i drive it all the time it s SHIT !!!! they are Vauxhall astra running gear, the engine is made by Isuzu ! the indicators are off a metro, the rear disc brakes are made by pontiac, and dont work, the hood leaks, the car sets fire to itself as there is soo much ambient heat under the bonnet and very little space, it costs an arm and a leg to get components from lotus (although you pay pennies if you dont have the lotus badge on the parts ie ASTRA) the turbo suffers incredible lag (worse than the mitsubishi evo) you crash in them you DIE as they are fibreglass. not to shatter ya dreams but they R SHIT motors, you would be bitterly dissapointed As Tiff was !! couldnt believe the dipshit put nos in even though he knew the gearbox was on its last legs and what did he expect would happen to the clutch ! not to mention he had pretty much detonated the pistons on a previous attempt..........................whine over STAY AWAY FROM LOTUS YOU ARE WARNED !!! lol *wink*

as 4 minis i had me Mk2 "S" to about 110 screaming....about 95mph before the first bridge on the coast road then the transmition failed and i could only utilise first gear to get home (standard box with stupid block and carbs on it dont go well together) got rid of it after that but wish i hadn`t bought an mgzr thinking me probs would be over (how wrong was i !)
