Ha, you see what you want to do is get your own place, then you don't have the annoyance of having to fit your parents cars in as well, meaning you can have loads more......

We've got 3 minis that are all in various states of disrepair, a golf that no-one wants to buy, an audi 80 and a Pug 206.

Not hugely happy with any of them to be honest and am often temted to get rid of the lot and start again...

Dave, its a 4x4 1.8 supercharged Golf, 160bhp or thereabouts I believe?

Don't know the history of why VW produced it though?

oooh, that sounds like something pretty interesting! How about some more info on it? Pictures of the engine bay for one!

Not that much to see really? Two good friends of mine both have Golf G60's, which share the same engine as the Rallye, but are only front wheel drive. The Golf G60's also only have the standard Mk2 Golf bodywork, so no wide arches like Alex's car has. The G60's do use the Rallye floorpan though I think? I'm sure Alex/Nicky (resident Golf nuts!) will know?
Think of a standard 8v golf engine bay, but with a supercharger mounted roughly where the alternator would usually go, and you are about there. They do have some interesting features though, the supercharger is a oscillating scroll type, quite unusual I believe. Also, the inlet system is arranged with a separate tract, with a second butterfly that opens on full throttle and bypasses the normal throttle butterfly. (I think that is right, dredging my memory slightly there)
Here is a picture of my mates G60, with the badge on the grille removed it is a very subtle car.

The car in the picture is for sale incidentally....

The supercharger is a G-lader an idea dating back to about 1890 but only rewalised by vw in the 1990s due to material problems.

The G60 means it has a 60mm scroll (IIRC)

Rallye's were hand built by VW Motorsport in the late 80s. Only 5000 were made, for holomogation (sp) - They took regular golf shells, added a completely new floor-pan, cut the old arches off and welded box arches in place - all metal. There's probably only a couple of hundred of them in the UK - and lot's of these have been smashed up. :(

VW competed for a few races in the WRC (or whatever it was called at the time) and made a bit over 300bhp from the 1.8 litre engine. They pretty much just put on a teeny weeny supercharger pullye to put masses of boost through it. They replaced the charger after every stage. *surprised*

I think they won a couple of races, but i cant remember where I saw that info - if anyone cares I can dig it out.

Nope, the g60's are just an 8v golf with wider wishbones and subframe up front - it has 10mm wider track in each corner. They use a slightly different engine to the Rallye, the same as the one found in the Corrado - the rallye used a slightly smaller CC to sneak into a lower class for the WRC back in the late 80s.

VW did make a batch of four wheel drive G60s called G60 Syncro's. They made use of the rallye floor pan, but retained the same body panels as the regular golfs - a proper wolf in sheeps clothing.

Yep, thats right, so you dont see much boost unless you open the throttle fully. The rallye's also had huge front mounted intercoolers, and some G60's had air con (mine doesn't).

Alex is also right about the 60mm scroll.

Edit:
..And VW were planning on using the G-lader charger a long time before 1990. I'm not entirely sure why they didnt use them earlier, but The first corrados used them in 1989, and rallyes also in the same year. Polo G40's used a smaller version (which is arguably a better design) which had a 40mm scroll bolted to a 1.3 litre engine.

My charger was made in 1987 - we know this because when we had it apart it has a date stamp - all G-Laders have this. :)

Ah right, I thought that the G60 used the Rallye floorpan as it definately has a wider tunnel than a Mk 2....well my mates edition one does anyway?

Yep its definately NOT a synchro

Chronic wheelspin in all but bone dry conditions proves that one, no grovelling on floor needed!!
