i've got a metro turbo engine, which i am about to rebuild and tune, but i wanted to try something out, and wondered if it has been done before.
basically i want to supercharge my turbo engine, whilst retaining the turbo at the same time.
so i would be running a rebuilt engine (probably in 1293 form) with a turbo AND a supercharger.
has it been done before and/or is it possible,
what troubles will i have etc.
any help will be appreciated.

turbo=blowthrough carb

supercharger=suckthrough carb

I suppose you could use the turbo suckthrough but no intercooler=low boost

I don't see the point?

A well set up high spec 1293 can produce up to 200 bhp!

Why bother going to the extra expense and ballache of fitting a turbo and a blower?

i just wondered if it could be done, and was going to give it a go.
i just like to try new things out. if people didnt try new things, we'd all be doing the same thing, and everything would be boring.

It can be done, it has been done, and it's about to be done again by a major OEM who's done a little supercharging in the past...

what sort of power can you get from doing it?

Well, the spercharger isn't what'll be force-inducing the engine at higher RPM, the turbo is.

So, it'll make exactly the same peak power as it would with just the turbo.

so basically the peak power will be the same, just the curve will be different as there will be more low down power?

It has been done before by nissan

The problem would be changing over from supercharger to turbo at the point the turbo starts producing more boost. Some sort of clutch and valve system on the supercharger I would assume, don't know though. Seems like a lot of trouble for little gain IMO.

I would love to see it running though, the flat torque curve theoretically possible would be quite impressive.

A Mk1 XR2 that often goes to Pod has a supercharger blowing into a turbo charger, at a certain boost the S/C boost is diverted and the turbo takes over.

Not entirely sure off all the in and outs of the machine but in runs 12.5(IIRC) with a squirt of N20.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

ive read about a cossie that does this, i think it used a lawnmower electronic clutch to disengage the supercharger at a certain rpm

Yup, using an Eaton supercharger and 'switchover valve'

Knew about this a while back *wink*

i bet you could use an airconditioning compressor clutch thingy in the supercharger to engage and disengage it.*smiley*

seems like a lot of hassle and space would be very limited in a mini

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Older Mercedes Eaton M45's and M62's have electric clutches like air-con ones already...*wink*

Not very sunny swanage

pretty much all big boat deisel engines, (ie, 40-50', no cross channel ferries!) use both a supercharger and a turbo, have done for years!!! no reaon why it couldnt be done for a car, and by the looks of things has been, but dont really see the point unless you just like being different (nothing wrong with that!!)

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

Dave, I'm aware that in the US, there are cheap Mazda Millenium blowers available, lysholm type with an solenoid operated de-clutch, they go for about $200 and I'd like to see one and see how big it is, 1L pass. That would probably be as good as a blower/turbo. I think eaton S4 blowers are crap looking at the maps, they work though *happy*

Bugger off, I'm getting there.
