I'm contemplating locating a metty T3turbo over the flywheel housing on my mini, because I have a Mk1 and don't want to cut the bulkhead. I know that I could use a mirage manifold and T2 but i'm trying to do it on a budget!

I was thinking about, and a cast turbo manifold, fabricating a flange to bolt up to this, and then using a 2" pipe to take the exhaust gasses to the turbo. I would then have to fabricate a replacement for the exhaust elbow and take the exhaust back down the usual exit route behind the block.
The only problem that I can see with doing this is with the turbo oil return, as it would have to be quite long?

Anybody done anythink similar? I have seen pictures of the Janspeed set up, and would be greatful for any pictures of the exhaust set up. Turbo Phil, don't you have one? Any chance of some snaps?

Cheers,

Choppo*happy*

Why would the oil return be long, just drill a hole closest place and the oil will find its own way back to the sump.

Now thats got me thinking.. what a neat install on both cars..

I take it its a make your own manifold thing.

Mike (silver mini) sure does a nice install. This guy is a real enthusiast - I don't think anyone has tried as many turbos and combinations as he has - let alone the boost pressures he's seen!

I'm going to run a new manifold for '06. It's all part of the EFI project - the stock cast-iron one is causing me too many issues with getting the inlet and injector position that I ideally want.
Also, the stock inlet manifold won't allow me to fit dual O2 sensors easilly.

I'm going to have something built with equal-length runners, but keeping the turbo in the same (ish) location as it is currently. A guy from work is probably going to do it for me, so won't be a rush job i suspect!

Wow! Thanks for the great replies guys, some fantastic pics too!

Have the manifold (exhaust) been based on LCB's or are they hand fabricated from scratch?

What do you think of my idea use a cast iron manifold etc as per my first post?

I'd say the cast manifold and adapter idea is a good one. By using the cast bit close to the head (where it is hottest) rather than a fabrication, you get away from problems of thermal expansion causing fabrications/welds to crack and distort.

Here's a couple of the Janspeed one.

As regards Mikes manifolds, he made them completely from sratch using stainless exhaust tubing, which were bent my a local exhaust place. The first year they were fitted he had problems with the flanges trying to pull away from the head face, he has since fitted a "bellows" in each runner and the problems have gone. This thing runs cherry red on every outing and has not cracked, credit to the lad. If you need to know any more i can find out for you has he's my best mate and lives opposite me.

This might help. I made one a while back just never put it to good use.

Phil, by bellows, do you mean like this jobber:

I have some questions that you could ask mike:

what size pipes did he use, what turbo is that (just out of interest!) and did he retain the clutch slave cylinder in its original position?

Cheers chap

He's not around at the mo to ask about the pipe size, but yes that is what i mean about bellows, he also used one in each runner and a big one like you pictured in the collector.
Turbo is from a 6 cylinder tractor motor ! lol, but seems to produce the goods, when it goes it certainly goes !!
Clutch cylinder is mounted on the back of the block, as per Janspeed.

Help me out here please... are either the red clubman or the silver car intercooled? The silver car looks like it could be with the blue pipe coming up from behind the grille.

The red car... is that an oil cooler off to the right side in the front?

Still kinda new at the whole turbo game. Something like this would be a strong contender in my upcoming engine build.

Those are very neat installations, but there is one drawback (certinally from my point of view) and that is weight and corner weights.

The Metty turbo set-up certinally uses the least ammount of exhaust (although the manifold is a bit weighty). but putting the turbo over the flywheel would bugger up my corner weights even more.

Getting it even across the front is hard enough with a lardy driver perched on one side, never mind the turbo.

The turbo sat that high isn't good for the CG either.

Probably not worth thinking about too much for a road car, but it was the first thing that struck me.

Err...the turbo isn't made out of granite, is it? :) I'm thinking it wouldn't add alllll that much weight. Hell, I weigh 280lbs so trying to get the front even is out the window. *wink*
