I'm contemplating locating a metty T3turbo over the flywheel housing on my mini, because I have a Mk1 and don't want to cut the bulkhead. I know that I could use a mirage manifold and T2 but i'm trying to do it on a budget!

I was thinking about, and a cast turbo manifold, fabricating a flange to bolt up to this, and then using a 2" pipe to take the exhaust gasses to the turbo. I would then have to fabricate a replacement for the exhaust elbow and take the exhaust back down the usual exit route behind the block.
The only problem that I can see with doing this is with the turbo oil return, as it would have to be quite long?

Anybody done anythink similar? I have seen pictures of the Janspeed set up, and would be greatful for any pictures of the exhaust set up. Turbo Phil, don't you have one? Any chance of some snaps?

Cheers,

Choppo

If you mounted the turbo over the clutch housing, I don't see any reason why you couldn't route the oil return into where the breather usually fits on top of the clutch housing?

After all, the oil will still find its way back to the sump, and also provide some more oil to the drop gears on the way.

Would the brake servo get in the way of a setup like this or should there be enough room?

What do you think?

In all seriousness, if you have a car with a servo, you are best placed to go and see for yourself physically how much room there is.

I suspect you will find not a lot.....but go have a look and let us know.

Those pics are helpful Dangerous - do you know of any where the turbo is connected up both sides and the head is on?

Any pic's would be great matey!
Also, does mounting the turbo here cause any more lag due to longer exhausts?

Less power I think due to the exhaust gas being cooler by the time it gets round there,Think special tuning mounted a turbo under the boot before

The gas will be cooler if you allow it to cool. You can wrap the pipe to keep heat in. I'm going to ceramic coat and wrap. I should lose VERY little heat...

I have mine up and running not enough to drive but running and turbo boost up with no load on it so I would imagine once on the road its gonna be boosting from low in the rev range.

Hopefully if all goes well will have chance to finish it off and have a drive of it.

Keep you all posted PS that link is to my motor in the build up stage

Hi just seen this and thought why not try to get a Turbotechnics manifold as it puts the turbo in the space where the carb is and the carb over the area where the uprated engine steady fits and yes it does look good and fits well, the only disadvantage is that unless you are using injection you will need to use a suck through instead of blowthrough.......

Cheers

Thanks

It's worth whatever someone wants to pay for one!

Which in my mind, is a lot less than the money one went for on ebay 12/18 months ago...
Suckthrough sucks.

I started my JS turbo up last week, on idle it rews up quick (very) but have only driven it around slow on a car show. Will get back to you on this when I go to the MOT, after that its on to some serius roadtesting :)

Well, your setup both sucks and blows. All N/A engines suck, that's for sure!

That should be the turbominis.co.uk slogan: "N/A Minis suck!"
