Rattle or Knocking ??? it's very unlikely to be the little end but could be the big end, it could also be a cracked piston skirt.

its really bizarre (to me anyway), only occurs under certain loads ... most noticable when the engine is idleing and you just give it a little gas then it knocks litle f**k (rather embarassing) ... doesnt seem to be loosing any power though... how much for a big end ?

The big end is only the crank bearings so around ?20 plus stripping down the engine to replace them.
As long as it hasn't damaged the crank and rod you should be alright but if it's been doing it a while it's probably damage the crank and thats going to need a regrind -0.010" at a cost of ?50.

Classic sign knocking under load of big end problems.

im betting, either ur horn is loose, or its the idler gear. if it was bottom end related i imagine youd know about it. i meen REALLY know about it.

No offence but a question like this would be beter asked on a normal mini forum where more people will see it. try www.miniowners.com :)

rattling or knocking?
i had a very loud RATTLING noise from the left hand side of the engine too. very noisey on idle and when revd. when i pressed the clutch it seemed to go a bit quieter so i replaced the idler bearings built back up still the same so i removed the clutch and flywheel again and took the clutch cover off and the bit which bolts to the crank has about six bolts on the otherside (can only see them with clutch cover removed of flywheel) which had come lose.
it might be worth removing the bell housing and see if you can turn the flywheel left to right a little bit without the crank moving

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
